Role Overview: This position will serve as a Design Intern for the LaPorte District Capital Program Management Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to Highway Engineer 1, Senior Design Engineer. Hourly Rate: The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor's degree. A Day in the Life: The essential functions of this role are as follows: Assists in the development of detailed bridge and/or road, traffic, and maintenance plans, specifications, and estimates for a variety of transportation projects prepared within the LaPorte District office; assist design engineers in conducting studies to assess feasibility and soundness of proposed project designs and to recommend changes based on findings regarding roadway and structure improvement type projects Develops preliminary and detailed bridge and roadway drawings using CADD drafting techniques; drawings may include drainage, traffic control, general roadway, structures, rights-of-way, and signals, for example Assists in calculating and summarizing plan quantities, including payment, earthwork and erosion control quantities, for example Assists in the collection and analyses of field data as necessary Assists with special projects and other duties as assigned The job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee.
