About The Position

This position will serve as an Asset Management Intern for the Technical Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. This position is intended to assist the Asset Engineers and Scoping Team in support and development of the Capital Program and Maintenance Work Program.

Requirements

  • Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation of the Maintenance Work Plan for the following year which includes chip seal, crack seal, and spot paving. This will involve data analysis and field validation.
  • Attend roadway condition checks and discuss/summarize findings.
  • Assist with field data collection, including gathering roadway patching data.
  • Attend pavement coring operations in the field to learn about the process and how to analyze the results.
  • Assist the Culvert Engineer with QC/QA of small culvert inspections.
  • Assist the Bridge Asset Engineer with updating the 5-year Maintenance Work Plan.
  • QA and update inventory of bridges that have semi-integral end bents.
  • Assist the Scoping Team with preparation of abbreviated and full engineer's reports for projects being proposed for the Capital Program.
  • Learn how cost estimates for Capital Projects are prepared and complete estimates as assigned for Roadway, Bridge and Drainage Structure projects.
  • Complete safety analysis for proposed Capital Projects.
  • Attend kick-off meetings and preliminary field checks with consultants for projects currently in the Capital Program.
  • Learn about the overall asset management process, including development of the 20-year plan and maintenance work plan.
  • Assist with gathering data to prepare responses to customer service inquiries.
  • Assist as needed with closing out permits and conducting compliance inspections.
