About The Position

Governmental Affairs and Initiatives (GAAI) seeks a reliable, organized, and collaborative student associate to strengthen our team and provide analytical support. Jeff Pool - Supervisor 10 hours weekly. Schedule to be determined with supervisor. Flexible hybrid schedule. Office located at Main. Assignment effective January 2026 - May 2026 Position open to The University of Texas at Austin undergraduate or graduate students only The Governmental Affairs Fiscal Analysis Student Associate supports the Governmental Affairs team by assisting with analysis of legislation and reporting obligations to the Legislature, Governor, Legislative Budget Board, and UT System. This role is ideal for students interested in state government, budget and finance, legislative analysis, as well as policy and operations impacting state agencies and institutions of higher education. Responsibilities will include analyzing legislation for potential fiscal and operational impact as well as supporting the office in preparation of the institution’s appropriations request to the Legislature. The student associate will gain an increased understanding of state government finance and operations within a higher education setting.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Government or related fields.
  • Minimum GPA 3+.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely provide non-biased neutral analysis.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to evolving project needs and feedback.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Texas Legislature.
  • Familiarity with spreadsheet analysis.
  • Interest in finance, operations, and/or public policy.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Director of Fiscal Analysis to analyze legislation and its fiscal impact to the University.
  • Assists policy coordinator with tracking and monitoring legislation with fiscal impact to the University.
  • Communicates with various academic departments and units across campus to assist with compilation of the institution’s appropriations request.
  • Engages with colleges, schools, and units to prepare fiscal note responses on proposed legislation.
  • Assists with assembling briefing documents and presentation materials.
