About The Position

Costello Medical provides scientific support to the healthcare industry in the analysis, interpretation, and communication of clinical and health economic data. Through both commercial and charitable projects, we are dedicated to the improvement of health and healthcare globally. Our Global Health Internship offers individuals from low- or middle-income countries (as classified by the World Bank ) the opportunity to gain skills in evidence-based medicine by working on a healthcare problem which is relevant to their community. The internship is intended to equip you with skills to bring back to apply to projects in your own country; it is not intended as a means to gain experience at a US company with a view to gaining full-time employment at Costello Medical. This internship aims to support individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who might not otherwise have access to this type of experience. As part of the application, we may ask questions about your and your parents’ financial status. About the Role This unique role offers you the opportunity to work collaboratively with us to design and conduct a global health-related project relevant to your community. We welcome project proposals relating to any of our service offerings, but examples of past projects include: Conducting a systematic literature review to assess the effect of bereavement care for parents after stillbirth in Ghana Developing an educational toolkit to improve the management of newborn infections in low- and middle-income countries Assessing the cost-effectiveness of cervical cancer screening in Kenya We will share our skills and knowledge in evidence-based medicine, research design, and medical communication. You will also have the opportunity to learn a range of technical skills relevant to your specific project approach. This internship is full-time and around three months in duration, depending on your availability. We are currently recruiting for start dates in June/July and you will be asked to state your availability on your application form. The successful candidate will be based in our Boston office. Requirements

  • Be a national of a low- or middle-income country (as this internship will be based in our US office, we are especially keen to work on projects that focus on the Americas. However, we would consider candidates from any other region that meets the criteria)
  • Hold a post-secondary degree directly related to the field of training obtained outside the United States. This could include early-career health practitioners, health-related charity or NGO workers, health researchers or other health professionals
  • Have at least one year of prior related work experience in their occupational field acquired outside the United States. This could include early-career health practitioners, health-related charity or NGO workers, health researchers or other health professionals
  • Have an idea for a global health-related project which they would like to work on, including a well-considered project approach
  • Be fluent in written and spoken English and have good numeracy skills
  • Be able to prioritize own tasks and workload
  • Have a “can do” approach, and initiative, positivity and creativity
  • Be able to work in a team and with an excellent level of productivity

Responsibilities

  • You will have the opportunity to identify and work on a project exploring and tackling a health-related issue relevant to your community; this may involve performing systematic searches of medical literature, assimilating clinical and cost-effectiveness evidence, and analyzing and creatively presenting data in a variety of formats
