About The Position

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Pottawatomie County Director of Geographic Information Systems, the GIS Technician is a non-exempt position under FLSA. The primary goal of this position is to assist in the creation and timely updating of the counties’ Geographic Information System. The position is responsible for the current upkeep of the GIS coverages and ownership tracking in the county.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Training using GIS software (ESRI software preferred) is required, or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities and skills.
  • One to two years of similar or related experience is preferred.
  • Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months to one year of employment.
  • Employee shall have the mathematical skills and the technical skills to operate computer systems and software such as MS Office, Arc/GIS, ORION, and KOMTEK.
  • Employee must have the ability to read maps, read and interpret legal descriptions, read and interpret legal documents (ordinances, surveys, road records, court records).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of chain of title relating to ownership of real property is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Operates GIS computer equipment to view, plot maps, and edit coverages
  • Responsible for the timely update of property ownership in the county
  • Edits and updates existing GIS coverages
  • Responsible for assisting other county offices & the general public with property ownership inquiries
  • Creates hardcopy maps for Pottawatomie County Departments and the public
  • Performs data conversion of county maps or other resources of data
  • Responsible for supplying parcel ownership information to the other county offices
  • Responsible for answering the telephone and assisting if possible
  • Greeting and assisting the walk-in general public
  • Researches title chains, ownership, easements as needed
  • Performs mailing of requested documents to the general public or other entities
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance
  • Ensures positive public relations with the public and other county employees
  • Assumes the duties of Office Manager in the absence of the Director of Geographic Information Systems
  • Performs bookkeeping duties for the GIS Office
  • Executes typing of the GIS Office documents and correspondences
  • Custodian of the GIS Office schedule
  • Performs filing and other miscellaneous office duties
  • Assists other departments with the use of ArcGIS software
  • Attends meetings for the Director of Geographic Information Systems
