About The Position

The Data Modernization Initiative (DMI) consists of data contractors, a GIS manager, and a project manager. We work with stakeholders across the commission to produce effective static and interactive visualizations that aid in data-driven decisions. Intern will support efforts to expand GIS across the commission, working collaboratively with different departments and bureaus for their geospatial needs. This includes creating maps to highlight disparities between Boston neighborhoods and promote health equity across the city.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the social determinants of health, and inequities in health outcomes as well as strategies to advance racial justice and health equity.
  • Commitment to health equity and racial/social justice issues.
  • Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems, geography, computer science, analytics, engineering, or a related field and work experience in consulting with user community to develop GIS products and services in an ESRI environment. Candidates working towards a Master's degree in Geographic Information Systems, geography, computer science, analytics are encouraged to apply.
  • Proficiency and knowledge of ESRI products including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Dashboards, Storymaps.
  • Intermediate to advanced scripting in Python and ArcPy
  • A strong ability to effectively manage time, flexibility with shifting priorities, and good communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ArcGIS Notebook Server preferred

Responsibilities

  • Works to help BPHC advance as an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy.
  • Develops and maintains Python scripts to automate geospatial workflows
  • Writes technical documentation
  • Prepares maps for reports
  • Creates innovative approaches to complex GIS challenges
  • Communicates effectively with the GIS manager and other project team members
