About The Position

Multiple temporary hourly Geographic Information System (GIS) / Cultural Resources (CR) Technician positions are available with Colorado State University and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana and F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. CEMML is seeking detail-oriented and highly motivated GIS/CR Technicians to join a collaborative team that supports a large-scale Air Force survey, infrastructure development, and deployment program and equally large-scale ArcGIS Hub Premium site. This position offers the opportunity to work within a dynamic team environment while delivering impactful solutions for a nationally critical infrastructure program. The GIS/CR Technicians will assist with creating and editing geospatial data, and developing data collection tools related to archaeological, historic, and cultural resources. The candidate must be familiar with and comfortable conducting activities such as walking long distances, excavating, screening, and driving in areas with rough terrain and where inclement weather conditions may occur. The candidate must also have experience integrating Tribal Cultural Specialists into archaeological investigations. This position will routinely interface with CEMML Cultural Resources Specialists, GIS Specialists, Air Force personnel, Tribal representatives, and other cooperators and contractors. The GIS/CR Specialist will be expected to: • Support field work surveys by providing on-site GIS technical support and troubleshooting. • Actively participate in field work throughout remote and rugged areas • Assist and support ArcGIS Online feature services and mobile tools (Field Maps, Smart Forms, Survey123) for complex field data collection workflows. • Assist with post-processing field data to ensure data integrity. • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. • Troubleshoot GIS tool performance issues in the field to maintain system reliability. The GIS/CR Technician is expected to provide in-person on-site support between March and October when field crews are deployed. The GIS/CR Technician is required to accompany field crews during 2-week field rotations occurring between March and October. The GIS/CR Technician will also remotely integrate with CEMML’s existing team of GIS, Natural Resources, and Cultural Resources Specialists located at CEMML headquarters in Colorado. CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. Requirements

• B.A./B.S. in Anthropology, Archaeology, Geography, or closely related field.
• At least 1-year of experience with Esri GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Online (AGOL), for creating and editing geospatial data, mapping, and managing attribute data.
• At least 1-year of demonstrated professional experience conducting archaeological fieldwork.
• Demonstrate experience working with a wide range of information, organizing details, and meeting deadlines.
• Demonstrate experience performing activities in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA)
• Working familiarity with U.S. federal laws and regulations that govern cultural resources management.
• Experience communicating technical information clearly and concisely to explain geospatial and cultural resource concepts to interdisciplinary audiences.

Nice To Haves

• Greater than two (2) years of relevant professional experience.
• Prior experience working with Traditional Cultural Specialists and/or Tribal Monitors.
• The most highly qualified candidates will possess knowledge and experience in Intermountain and Great Plains archaeology.
• Experience working with features of the built environment, including landscapes, structures and buildings a plus
• Professional experience configuring web and/or mobile ArcGIS applications including Field Maps Smart Forms and/or Survey123 forms, particularly for cultural resource projects.
• Familiarity with content management systems such as Box, SharePoint, or other similar software.
• Demonstrated familiarity with cultural resource issues on U.S. military installations and knowledge of Department of Defense policies and processes relating to cultural resources management.
• Experience implementing Standard Operating Procedures.

Responsibilities

• Assist with compliance inspections of archaeological fieldwork to ensure compliance with the project Programmatic Agreement (PA) and other regulatory documents.
• Create, edit, and maintain cultural resource geodatabases, feature services, and metadata.
• Configure and deploy mobile data collection tools (ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123) for cultural resource surveys and monitoring.
• Assist with on-site training and technical support for system users.
• Follow geospatial workflows, data standards, and procedures for consistency across the project.
• Ensure QA/QC of cultural resources geospatial data is properly documented with complete and standardized metadata.
• Integrate Tribal Cultural Specialists and Tribal Monitors into archaeological fieldwork.
