About The Position

Under close supervision, performs a variety of entry-level technical duties related to the City's Geographic Information System (GIS). Work includes data collection, data editing, mapping, and field verification to support City departments and infrastructure management. This position provides hands-on experience in municipal GIS operations and is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in geographic information systems, planning, engineering, or environmental sciences.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Geography, GIS, Planning, Civil Engineering, Natural Resources, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Basic familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or similar platforms.
  • Understanding of spatial data concepts and basic cartographic principles.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform repetitive data tasks accurately.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Python scripting for GIS workflows.
  • Basic understanding of relational databases or SQL concepts.
  • Experience with GPS or mobile GIS data collection tools.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, edit, and maintain all types of geographic data using established GIS standards and procedures.
  • Assist with field data collection using GPS units, tablets, and mobile GIS applications.
  • Create maps and visualizations for the city departments, public information requests, and internal projects.
  • Perform quality control checks to maintain accuracy and consistency of GIS datasets.
  • Assist with updating and maintaining infrastructure and public works datasets including utilities, transportation, and facilities.
  • Support GIS staff with data cleanup, geocoding, and database maintenance.
  • Assist with maintaining web maps and applications used y City departments and the public.
  • Respond to internal department requests for maps and spatial data.
  • Assist with special GIS projects and data improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Some work may involve outdoor field data collection and walking moderate distances.
