About The Position

Under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the GI Technician assists physicians or other providers with procedures performed in the gastroenterology endoscopy setting. Outpatients and inpatients who present with a wide range of illnesses and complaints are cared for in this endoscopy setting. Some duties may be performed independently with intermittent supervision by the registered nurse.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year clinical setting experience.
  • BLS completed prior to going to the unit/ department and maintained going forward
  • The GI Tech must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on assigned unit(s). The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his or her age specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the units policies and procedures

Nice To Haves

  • Nursing Assistant Certified by the State of Tennessee preferred, nursing student completing or near completion of Fundamentals of Nursing, EMT, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Medical Assistant.
  • One (1) year experience assisting in GI or pulmonary medical procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in educating the patient about the procedure being performed, including preparation, rationale, and expectations.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the plan of care. Adapts patient instruction to patient needs. Consults with the provider or RN as needed.
  • Assists RN with the transport of sedated patients to the recovery area. May escort patients to specific locations for discharge.
  • Communicates accurate patient observations, interventions, and outcomes of care to the RN.
  • Informs the RN of the equipment, accessories, supplies, and implants used during procedures including quantity, size, and equipment settings to be documented in the medical record.
  • Participates in specimen collection and handling. Correctly labels specimens according to hospital policy.
  • Demonstrates proper handling and use of various types and sizes of video endoscopes.
  • Understands theory and safety when using cautery modalities.
  • Properly pre-cleans/disinfects endoscopic equipment and accessories prior to scope washing.
  • Demonstrates correct processing and cleaning of dirty scopes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
