About The Position

This position is accountable for the acquisition and testing of soil samples, operation and maintenance of pavement and soil sampling and testing equipment, preparation of soil boring logs and soil profiles, and nuclear density gauge monitoring and field use training.

Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering, or a job-related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience OR seven years of engineering experience.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Requires ability to obtain a Class B CDL with air brakes within six months of hire date.
  • Requires the ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Requires the ability to regularly lift 50 pounds and traverse uneven terrain.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering and the application of engineering techniques to the design, construction, and maintenance of public works.
  • Knowledge of mathematics and its application to project design, field surveying and engineering computational activities.
  • Knowledge of geotechnical terminology and concepts.
  • Ability to supervise a staff engaged in either field or office engineering functions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and/or supervises the operation of drilling and sampling equipment and ensures equipment receives all required maintenance.
  • Identifies, classifies, and tests soil and rock samples in an organized, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Prepares boring logs, soil profiles, and assists in the preparation of geotechnical reports.
  • Compiles laboratory test results for use in geotechnical reports.
  • Maintains accurate records of equipment usage and maintenance.
  • Trains, motivates, and evaluates assigned personnel to ensure a well-developed and competent staff who comply with all departmental safety rules and practices.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
