About The Position

The Geology Intern position is a part-time position based out of our Greenville, South Carolina office that offers an opportunity to work during the months of May to August with the potential to develop into a full-time post-graduation position within the North Wind Group family of companies. The Geology Intern will work collaboratively with our Geologists and Environmental Scientists to support our federal customers. This position will allow a Geology student to learn from hands-on experience with industry professionals. Work includes assistance with groundwater and soil monitoring, drilling oversight, remedial investigation, GIS, and general office work to support our environmental staff. North Wind’s projects range from small site assessments to large-scale remediation projects and support a wide variety of customers, including the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD), the Navy, and Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

Requirements

  • Pursuing degree in geology or other related scientific discipline required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of geology, chemistry, engineering, biology or similar discipline courses.
  • Junior or Senior level student pursuing a bachelor’s degree
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in speech and writing.
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Facilitate communication and effectively interface with senior geologists, engineers, project managers, and other North Wind personnel on a daily basis.
  • Effectively manage time to meet deadlines.
  • Think critically and independently while adhering to guidelines and procedures.
  • Apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and/or oral instructions and to deal with problems involving variables in non-standardized situations.
  • Collaborate with other North Wind personnel, take initiative, and work well independently.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, scientific notation, and decimals.
  • Willingness to gain an understanding of an array of data analysis techniques
  • Willingness to gain an understanding of various sampling methods
  • Comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Willingness to travel overnight for project work as allowed by school schedule. Minimal travel expected.
  • Must be a US citizen

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with standard protocols for environmental sampling and monitoring is preferred but not required. On the job training is available.
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER training preferred but not required. Company sponsored training is available.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA Strongly preferred
  • GIS experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Data & Reporting: Collect, analyze, and report on environmental field work activities and performance metrics
  • Fieldwork & Monitoring: Assist with site inspections and take environmental samples (soil, water, air) in compliance with proper environmental sample collection and preservation methods
  • Project Assistance: Support environmental staff with field work and prepare reports or presentations.
  • Office Support: Assist with copying, report production, excel metrics tracking.
