About The Position

This Geologist / Hydrogeologist position is responsible for administration of the Central Coastal Plain Capacity Use Area (CCPCUA) regulatory program, and for conducting complex studies or portions of studies in the Groundwater Resources Branch of the Division of Water Resources Water Planning Section. Studies usually cover large regions of the state and may include analysis of data from neighboring states and relations with those states. The Hydrogeologist will often work concurrently on two or more groundwater projects in different stages of completion. This position also works to continue to educate permittees and assist them in seeking/developing alternative water sources. Licensure as a Professional Geologist by the NC Board for the Licensing of Geologists is not required but is considered an asset. This position requires the ability to walk through rough terrain during field investigations; experience with computer software applications used for word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, and modeling; and ability to make public presentations. Occasional overnight travel and a valid NC Driver’s license are required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology, geosciences, physical science, or a related field or engineering with 30 credit hours of geological science course work, from an accredited college or university
  • ability to walk through rough terrain during field investigations
  • experience with computer software applications used for word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, and modeling
  • ability to make public presentations
  • valid NC Driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Lead and facilitate the review and processing of CCPCUA water use permit applications/renewals, maintain water use database and water level data
  • Initiate regulatory compliance procedures to address all withdrawals in the capacity use area and administer enforcement proceedings
  • Generate reports and prepare presentations, including complex portions of CCPCUA status and assessment reports to the Environmental Management Commission
  • Respond to inquiries from DEQ staff, environmental consulting/engineering firms, other governmental agencies, environmental commissions, and the public concerning the CCPCUA water use program
  • Conduct Groundwater Investigations of facilities that could have an adverse impact on groundwater and negotiate possible remedies, which may include computer modeling of ground water flow, directing of well location surveys and water quality sampling, designing aquifer pump tests, and delegating responsibilities to other staff
  • Gather and perform analyses on groundwater information and interpret previous analyses
