About The Position

The Genetic Counselor at Northwestern Medicine's Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, BCVI, is responsible for providing cardiovascular genetic counseling to patients. This role involves collaborating with the Cardiovascular Genetics team and faculty from the Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling to deliver lectures, supervise, and mentor graduate students. Additionally, the Genetic Counselor participates in the clinical research program of the section. The position requires adherence to Northwestern Memorial HealthCare's mission, vision, values, Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, and all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, regulatory, and accreditation standards.

Requirements

  • Genetic Counselor, Licensed
  • Zero (0) to two (2) years’ experience in a relevant role

Responsibilities

  • Providing cardiovascular genetic counseling to patients
  • Working with the Cardiovascular Genetics team
  • Working with other faculty of the Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling to provide lectures, supervision and mentoring of graduate students
  • Participating in the clinical research program of the section
  • Analyzing genetic information to identify patients or families at risk for specific disorders or syndromes
  • Providing genetic counseling in specified areas of Cardiovascular clinical genetics
  • Assessing patients' psychological or emotional needs such as those relating to stress, fear of test results, financial issues, and marital conflicts to make referral recommendations or assist patients in managing test outcomes
  • Providing counseling to patient and family members by providing information, education, or reassurance
  • Determining or coordinating treatment plans by requesting laboratory services, reviewing genetics or counseling literature, and considering histories or diagnostic data
  • Discussing testing options and the associated risks, benefits and limitations with patients and families to assist them in making informed decisions
  • Interpreting laboratory results and communicating findings to patients or physicians
  • Interviewing patients or reviewing medical records to obtain comprehensive patient or family medical histories, and documenting findings
