Requirements

  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from a school accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling.
  • Board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or the American Board of Medical Genetics.
  • Obtains Arkansas Licensure for Genetic Counseling.

Responsibilities

  • Provides education and genetic counseling to prenatal/preconception patients and families for a wide variety of indications.
  • Gathers medical, developmental, and family history and recommends medical or genetic testing.
  • Participates in the formulation of a comprehensive plan of care for high-risk pregnancies affected with birth defects and/or genetic/chromosome disorders. This may occur at any of our Women’s Health/Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinics.
  • Provides test results and educates the patient/family on the significance of the results.
  • Reviews inheritance patterns and determines at-risk family members.
  • Works closely with physicians in a wide variety of Women’s Health clinical specialties to help integrate genetics into prenatal patient care.
  • Assists in the coordination of referrals to other specialists as needed.
  • Assists with specialty prenatal diagnosis clinics (ie, fetal cardiology) as assigned.
  • Stays current on information regarding specific genetic syndromes, available testing, and research opportunities.
  • Completion of documentation of patient visits/interactions, including letters to patients/referring physicians in a timely manner.
  • Serves as a liaison between UAMS (and all MFM clinics) and private healthcare providers to answer questions regarding genetic counseling/testing, available screening, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Assists in the completion of tasks associated with the ADH maternal serum screening program.
  • Participates in the education of students in medicine, allied healthcare, nursing, and sonography as directed.
  • Designs educational materials and protocols for existing and new Women’s Health programs related to genetics.
  • Presents educational sessions to schools, consumer groups, and the public as directed/of interested.
  • Supervises MS in GC students during their prenatal genetics clinical rotations.
  • Coordinates and conducts special assignments as directed by MFM physicians and AFDM staff.
  • Participates in MFM Fellow research projects as interested
  • Participates in MS in GC research projects as interested.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
