Job Description: Job Summary: Provides genetic counseling to patients regarding hereditary syndromes. Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues. Serves as a resource to physicians, staff, and other genetic counselors regarding genetic issues.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling in progress and degree completed prior to start date required.
  • 0-1 years related work experience required.
  • Provisional Genetic Counselor License required prior to start date.
  • Full Genetic Counselor License required with 6 months of employment.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Responsibilities

  • Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues which typically involves genetic or other testing.
  • Interviews and evaluates patients' medical and genetic information.
  • Recommends and coordinates additional testing and referrals.
  • Provides extensive patient contact; explains procedures and risks, aids with decision-making, and provides psychosocial counseling as needed and follow-up.
  • Maintains appropriate records including patient information, progress notes and charts, statistics, and encounter forms.
  • Provides summary letters and other necessary documentation to referring providers and patients.
  • Serves as resource to patients, providers, residents, and others regarding genetic counseling issues.
  • Works directly and meets regularly with administrative management and Medical Director regarding the genetics counseling program.
  • Maintains current knowledge regarding trends and developments in the field of genetics from multiple professional sources.
  • Attends genetics conferences and presentations.
