About The Position

We are seeking a Genetic Counseling Coordinator. Under direct supervision by genetic counselors and guided by the procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Genetic Counselor Coordinator is responsible for Supporting the outreach and education function for the clinic to provide counseling and testing. Interview patients by phone and document personal and family medical history. Managing coordination of joint visits with genetic counselors and physicians. Preparing blood samples for transportation to laboratories within and outside of JHU. Facilitate follow up with referring healthcare providers and laboratory personnel. Other patient preparation and follow-up tasks to support genetic counselors. S/he works as a team member with other practice staff and consistently projects a professional and courteous demeanor. They must pay close attention to detail and demonstrate excellent customer service skills with patients and staff. They must support the goal to accomplish more for patients in a collaborative work environment. Specific Duties and Responsibilities 60%Assisting genetic counselors with all aspects of patient intake, genetic counseling and documentation. Genetic Counselor assistant will work primarily with clinical (3) genetic counselors. He/she will learn all aspects of those genetic counselors’ clinical areas and needs to work independently coordinating clinical care and patient visits. This will include: Interview patients and document personal and family medical history Interface with patients and providers to identify and gather key outside records; meet with team for reviewand coordinate to schedule appropriate patient visits Create and organize patient charts prior to clinic visits and ensure that they are available to providers Coordinate telegenetics video appointments for patients and providers Invite new patients to participate in telegenetics research study Preparation of letters of medical necessity Managing coordination of joint visits with genetic counselors and physicians in conjunction with the Center for Inherited Heart Disease clinic coordinator Assist and provide coverage for Center for Inherited Heart Disease clinic coordinators Provide phone coverage for both the CIHD and ARVD lines Contact laboratories to determine all necessary steps for gene testing for specific genes, and act as liaison with laboratories to make sure all samples and required forms and consents are completed and received Research and complete searches for relevant articles and follow up database with mutations Preparing blood samples for transportation to laboratories within and outside of JHU Preparation of family genetic counseling reports Consultations with healthcare providers and laboratories Other patient preparation, care, and follow-up tasks Documented pedigrees in progeny Database data and follow up Facilitate patient outreach and education for the clinic Create and maintain mutation/variant database and maintain sample database 25%Contacting new patients and family members Primarily phone contact regarding genetic counseling/consult appointments, genetic testing and participation in studies for enrollment or follow-up purposes. 15%Performing other duties as assigned This may include event participation and preparation of materials for events, staffing outreach events, filing, stocking all needed supplies, transporting samples to and from labs, preparing sample kits and sending to families as needed, letters, follow up with referring health professionals, typing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Some related experience in a medical office environment.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with patient and or family contact in a community or medical setting.
  • Previous experience with clinical projects, either in an administrative or clinical role, strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical practice terminology and genetic terminology and concepts.
  • Experience with Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint preferred.
  • Experience with phlebotomy is an asset.
