The Genetic Counseling - Clinical Extender will assist Licensed Genetic Counselors with direct and indirect patient care on the unit while also supporting the genetic testing processes of the department. This role plays a vital part in collaborating with all interdisciplinary departmental staff. The Clinical Extender assists with a variety of administrative and clinical tasks using scientific knowledge in biology and genetics. These tasks include, but are not limited to, reviewing and obtaining medical records, collecting and processing personal and family medical histories, preparing test kits and requisitions, packaging lab specimens, communicating with genetic testing laboratories about patient samples, tracking genetic tests and results, identifying patient resources for genetic diseases, and obtaining patient cost estimates and prior authorizations for testing. Under the supervision of the Licensed Genetic Counselor, the Clinical Extender will communicate results to the patient with clear documentation in the EMR. The Clinical Extender may attend and participate in hospital or system-wide meetings to aid in coordination of care. The Clinical Extender may also assist with projects throughout the department or assist with taking vitals and rooming patients. As a High Reliability Organization (HRO), responsibilities require focus on safety, quality and efficiency in performing job duties.
