Summary: The Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) provides administrative and clinical support to Certified Genetic Counselors (CGCs) in a healthcare or research setting. This position helps facilitate genetic consultations by gathering patient medical histories, coordinating genetic testing, and managing clinical documentation. GCAs also assist with patient communication and may play a role in clinical research projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Genetics, Biology, Health Science, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology and clinical workflows.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and database management is preferred but not requred.
  • Experience in healthcare or a research environment is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Support: Collect and review patient medical records, family histories, and pedigree information. Prepare documentation for genetic counseling sessions and ensure the accuracy of patient files. Assist in the coordination of genetic testing, including pre-authorization with insurance and communicating with laboratories. Communicate results of normal tests to patients under the supervision of Certified Genetic Counselors.
  • Administrative Tasks: Maintain and update patient databases and genetic testing logs. Schedule appointments. Review referrals under supervision of Genetic Counselors and manage the workflow for the Genetic Counselor. Assist in drafting and delivering patient educational materials. Assist with coordination of Genetics Combined Clinic when needed.
  • Clinical and Research Support: Prepare clinical summaries and draft consultation reports for review. Participate in clinical research projects by collecting and managing data. Stay current on new genetic testing technologies and assist in implementing new practices within the clinic or department.
