Within our portfolio of companies, International SOS, headquartered in Houston, Texas provides contracted healthcare support to Government defense and civil agencies and government contractors, including support to military exercises and operations, diplomatic missions, natural disasters, and refugee care. The General Surgical Officer responsible for the preoperative, operative, and postoperative care of patients at DOS/DOD clinics. The General Surgical Officer will supervise and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient management. The incumbent will be performing life-saving surgery for a full range of general emergency surgical cases, including vascular, neurologic, and orthopedic; and full-range of general surgical cases, including abdominal, urologic, vascular, and soft-tissue.

Requirements

  • U.S. board-certified or recently ABS qualified General Surgeon.
  • Full unrestricted U.S. Licensure from any State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Current ATLS is required; recent completion of Tactical Combat Casualty Care or comparable advanced trauma course featuring “live tissue”, or exceptional simulation training is desirable.
  • Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalency.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  • Minimum 5 years’ recent experience including 6 months within the last year
  • MD or DO is required. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges: Liaison Committee on Medical Education or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Must meet pre-deployment physical requirements
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • May require bending, stooping and lifting to 25 lbs.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.
  • Valid US Passport with at least 18 months before expiration date.
  • Must maintain a current passport during your stay in Iraq.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance, specifically a MRPT.
  • Must be able to relocate to Iraq for the duration of the project.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on a military site working as a government subcontractor or prime contractor is preferred.
  • Applicants with current clearances are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the surgical team and conduct thorough preoperative assessments, including reviewing medical histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests to determine the need for surgical intervention.
  • Perform a variety of surgical procedures, such as appendectomies, hernia repairs, bowel resections, and more, using appropriate techniques and ensuring patient safety.
  • Monitor patients during recovery, addressing complications, and providing follow-up care instructions to promote healing and complications.
  • Educate patients and their families about surgical procedures, potential risks, and postoperative care requirements.
  • Work closely with anesthesiologists, nurses, and other medical professionals to coordinate surgical care and ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate medical records, including operation notes and patient progress reports, in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Completes required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.
