About The Position

The General Superintendent, through direct contact, has the responsibility to ensure that field personnel have the support and training necessary to perform the work the company undertakes in a safe, productive and skilled manner and the project goals have been met.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor projects to ensure that each Superintendent has the tools, equipment and manpower to perform the job properly and that assumptions made in the estimate are conveyed to the field
  • Ensure that the field personnel on each jobsite understand the project scope and estimates and are recording labor units accurately and in a timely manner
  • Maintain working relationships with trade union officials in all areas where the company has labor agreements
  • Represent the company at all grievance hearings in which the company may be a participant
  • Establish training schedule for field craft and field staff and assist in providing the training where appropriate
  • Ensure that company-owned equipment is maintained in such a manner as to preserve its maximum value and assure its availability when required
  • Recommend and submit requests for the purchase of jobsite equipment to the Vice President, Group Manager, with final approval by the President
  • Manage company yard operations including all maintenance, storage of materials and security
  • Ensure that the project staff fully understands crew sizing, assist the project staff in setting up the project templates, and monitor their progress
  • Oversees that the field supervision staff has performed project scheduling, safety, and quality control of all the work performed
  • Assist with marketing efforts by helping the project management staff analyze project requirements prior to submitting pricing and qualifications
  • Ensure the project management staff and Superintendents are maintaining established cost control procedures especially as it relates to union labor
  • Manage the sharing of union labor between all projects and Pankow companies with its region to ensure an adequate union labor force is available to perform the work in a timely manner
  • Attend meetings with new potential clients and maintain relationships with existing clients on an as-needed basis as directed by the Vice President, Group Manager, both directly and through others
  • Participate in trade/industry organizations and events as determined by the Vice President, Group Manager
  • Provide project pursuit/proposal support (e.g., project planning, estimating, scheduling) and participate in follow-up interviews as required
  • Assist in hiring personnel for field assignments
  • Identify union personnel with the potential for advancement. When appropriate, recommend these individuals be converted to confidential personnel. Negotiate salary agreements with potential Superintendents with approval of the Vice President, Group Manager and the President
  • Represent the company at all OSHA hearings with assistance from the Regional Safety Manager
  • Responsible for evaluating job performance of all Superintendents and assigning the right Superintendent to the right project based on their ability
  • Implement techniques to maintain positive morale and to retain field personnel
  • Participate in annual strategic and business planning as requested by the Group Manager
  • Participate in collateral corporate functions (i.e., committees, task forces, focus groups) as needed
  • Hold monthly Superintendent meetings with Direct Reports; discuss topics that reinforce the company’s goals and strategy also new topics in safety, man power, management tools and techniques
  • Bridge the communication from the field to the office for each project (e.g., making sure insurance and sub-contracts are in place before work is scheduled, submittals are being processed and approved as required to meet the project schedule
