About The Position

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The reporting location can be any of the following FE facilities, Akron, OH; Greensburg, PA; Reading, PA; or Fairmont, WV. This position is accountable for leading a staff engaged in providing field engineering services and technical support for the maintenance, repair, construction, testing, and commissioning of substation equipment at substations and switchyards in a defined area of responsibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (BSEE, BSME) from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer's (PE) License (2) a Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in either substation operations, maintenance, construction, planning, protection, and/or design. Corporate or regional substation experience is preferred.
  • A Professional Engineering (PE) License in one of the states served by FirstEnergy. Consideration will be given for a seasoned engineering applicant without a PE provided they commit to obtaining a PE within 18 months of job acceptance.
  • Previous experience at a Manager or above level required.
  • A solid working knowledge of power and control engineering, substation maintenance and construction methods, and substation operations.
  • Commitment to FirstEnergy's Safety Vision, the Accident Prevention Handbook & Manual of Operations required.
  • Understanding of human performance principles and associated tools.
  • Strong organizational, tactical & team building skills required.
  • Fluency with established budgeting, forecasting and capital portfolio processes.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships at all levels of FirstEnergy.
  • Strong knowledge and fluency with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Demonstrate the Leadership skills to effectively lead change management processes from concept to completion.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and the ability to lead others in achieving goals for the benefit of the business unit and FirstEnergy.
  • Ability to expedite responsible decisions based on leading with safety principles and decision-making processes that demonstrate sound judgment and are in alignment with FirstEnergy's Power of Integrity & Core Values and Behaviors.

Nice To Haves

  • Corporate or regional substation experience is preferred.
  • General knowledge of substation applications (e.g., RTS, PowerBase, Cascade, etc.) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead with safety by controlling exposure for self, team and contracted support staff through personal behaviors, knowledge of safety management systems, and field verifications.
  • Actively champion human performance improvement initiatives and promote continuous learning through sharing of operating experiences, working closely with the human performance, misoperation, and inoperable equipment business leads.
  • Foster a diverse and inclusive team environment where all employees are encouraged to speak up, maintain a questioning attitude, and provide input on ways to improve work practices.
  • Align resources and management responsibilities to ensure the proper level of support across the transmission companies and state-based operations.
  • Support efforts to build natural compliance with established regulatory requirements in substation maintenance, commissioning, and facility ratings.
  • Maintain strong working relationship with FEU Substation Operations and our contractor partners. Oversee the continuous improvement of FirstEnergy's substation maintenance and commissioning practices.
  • Strengthen existing processes and tools in substation work management and commissioning document management.
  • Build fluency in the team's knowledge and adherence to the FET Project Management Lifecycle Process (PLMP).
  • Participate in industry engagement events (i.e. NATF, EPRI, etc.) to identify continuous improvement opportunities and share best practices.
  • Support environmental stewardship efforts directly related to substation operations.
  • Ensure team is providing timely and consistent response to emergent transmission substation equipment failures and high-impact events.
  • Support development and implementation of the department's priorities and business plan.
  • Provide resources and support for transmission reliability improvement initiatives, substation practice enhancements, and special projects.
  • Drive continuous improvement in existing technical programs and processes owned and/or administered by Transmission and Substation Services.
  • Execute the performance management process by providing feedback and coaching on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
  • Identify individual needs of employees for development purposes and provide practical opportunities for employees to grow in specific areas of interest.
  • Conduct occasional field visits to verify presence of safety and human performance controls, observe work methods, and provide targeted feedback.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the FirstEnergy system and participate in industry related conferences outside of FirstEnergy's footprint.
