About The Position

Roles and Responsibilities: 1. Strategic Leadership and Direction Establish and execute a clear strategic roadmap that aligns with Carver Companies’ long‑term objectives. Identify and capitalize on emerging market opportunities, competitive pressures, and industry trends to guide strategic positioning. Lead the development of multi‑year business plans, capital strategies, and organizational priorities. Champion innovation, operational excellence, and continuous improvement across the business unit. 2. Operational Management Manage day-to-day operations of the tug and barge fleet, ensuring that all vessels are operating efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations. Coordinate tug and barge scheduling for loading, unloading, transport, and maintenance. Develop and monitor performance metrics, ensuring services meet or exceed standards and customer expectations. Establish and enforce operational processes to ensure smooth workflows and consistency across the fleet. Ensure proper fleet management, including maintenance schedules and performance evaluations of tugboats and barges. Optimize logistics and route planning to ensure cost-effective and timely transport services. Manage maintenance schedules for tugboats and barges to ensure vessels are in good working condition and minimize downtime. 3. Financial Management Responsible for profit and loss of the marine towing division, ensuring strong financial health and disciplined cost management. Evaluate financial performance through the implementation of KPI dashboards, operational analytics, and financial reporting. Develop and manage budgets with the support of the Controller for the tug/barge fleet to ensure financial targets are met. Drive initiatives that enhance profitability, optimize asset utilization, and strengthen return on investment. Lead capital planning, including fleet investments, infrastructure improvements, and strategic resource allocation. 4. Team Leadership and Development Lead and mentor the team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and collaboration. Support succession planning, leadership development, and workforce strategy across the business unit. Promote a values‑driven environment that prioritizes safety, integrity, and operational discipline. Ensure organizational structure and capabilities evolve in alignment with business growth. Manage recruitment, training, and performance management for the tug crews, and supporting staff in coordination with the group HR team. 5. Safety and Regulatory Compliance Ensure that all tug and barge operations comply with local, national, and international maritime laws and environmental standards. Implement and enforce safety policies, conduct regular safety drills, and ensure the safety of the crew, vessels, and the environment. Ensure regular inspections of the vessels to ensure they meet safety standards and prevent accidents. 6. Business Development and Client Relations Build and maintain relationships with key clients and stakeholders, ensuring that customer needs are met, and service quality is maintained. Identify new business opportunities, expand market share, and explore potential areas for fleet or service growth. Lead commercial negotiations, contract discussions, and strategic partnerships that expand market presence Represent Carver Marine Towing in industry forums, customer engagements, and executive‑level interactions. 7. Risk Management Identify and assess potential risks to the business, including operational, financial, and safety-related risks. Ensure compliance with USCG, OSHA, environmental regulations, and internal policies Develop and implement plans to mitigate risks, including insurance and liability management. Be prepared for emergency situations, such as accidents or weather-related disruptions, and implement response strategies. 8. Innovation and Improvement Stay updated with industry trends and advancements in tug/barge technology Implement innovative solutions to improve operational efficiency and service quality. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging team to identify and implement process enhancements. 9. Reporting and Communication Provide regular updates on business performance, project status, safety incidents, and financial performance to the Executive Director of Operations. Ensure effective communication within the team to guarantee smooth operations across departments.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the maritime industry, with at least 5 years in a senior management or leadership role in maritime transportation or related industry.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning, financial management, and organizational leadership.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience in customer engagement, contract negotiation, and business development.
  • Exceptional communication, executive presence, and decision‑making capability.
  • Ability to lead through influence, manage complexity, and drive long‑term performance.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, budgeting, and cost control in a maritime or related industrial environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Maritime Studies, Engineering, Business Administration, Management or a related field
  • Professional certifications related to maritime operations, safety, or ship management are a plus (e.g., STCW, IMO certifications).
