About The Position

This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a General Maintenance Plumbing Supervisor for the Buena Vista Correctional Complex; a Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) prison facility in Buena Vista, CO. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; training and overseeing inmate workers in general maintenance and plumbing skills and procedures and ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant completion of assigned building and grounds maintenance tasks. The General Maintenance Plumbing Supervisor promotes the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment. Safety and Security - position maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication, trains and guides staff and inmates in comprehensive keys, tool, equipment and chemical control and use; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches, strip searches and inmate shakedowns; monitors workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when necessary and if necessary, physically controls inmates through proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy, performs shakedowns of work sites and limits inmate access to designated areas; position performs inmate counts, transportation and movement control; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment. Supervision - provides supervision of assigned inmate workers; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. Trains and instructs staff and inmates in the appropriate use of all relevant tools, equipment and procedures to ensure efficient, safe and effective completion of assigned tasks; stresses safe construction practices and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for self, staff and inmates; exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity and ethical behavior. Participates in inmate hiring process in order to ensure appropriate placement on crews and training needs; tracks and calculates inmate hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances; inspects work and performs inmate evaluations; reduces inmate idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community reentry. Operations - position ensures the safe, efficient, compliant and cost effective operations of building and grounds construction, repair or maintenance specializing in plumbing. Plumbing - position is responsible for assisting with all of the following: installs, repairs and modifies back flow prevention, water delivery and waste lines, air gaps, vent stacks, toilets, lavatories, thermostatic shower mixing valves, fire suppression sprinkler systems, storm and sewer lines, drains, grease traps, steam and condensate return lines, pumps, valves, regulators and flush valves.   Building Maintenance - position is responsible for the maintenance of facility buildings to include painting, remodeling and repairs; provides instruction and training to inmates in interior and exterior painting, installation, repair, building, modifying and remodeling of prison buildings that are constructed of various materials ( which may include steel, rock, brick, masonry, wood, plaster and pre-stressed concrete); performs and provides training in the design, installation and repair & maintenance of all facility structures; trains inmate workers in the proper use, care and accountability of applicable tools, equipment, chemicals and machinery to ensure safe, effective and efficient completion of projects.   Grounds Maintenance - position is responsible for the maintenance of facility grounds to include design, installation and daily maintenance and repair of irrigation pumps, sprinkler heads and lines, pipelines, valves, supply ditches and gates; provides instruction and training to inmates in all aspects of grounds maintenance and the proper use, care and accountability of applicable tools, equipment, chemicals and machinery to ensure safe, effective and efficient completion of projects. Position is responsible for snow removal throughout complex. The General Maintenance Plumbing Supervisor coordinates with other trades projects in order to facilitate the most economical use of resources and assists other physical plant staff with duties as assigned. Requirements

  • Four (4) years of employment experience in building/equipment maintenance or a combination of building and grounds maintenance. Two (2) of the four yearsmust includeplumbing experience.
  • Building Maintenance - includes preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance; planning, estimating and performing a variety of "hands on" trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical on residential, commercial, or agricultural structures.
  • Grounds Maintenance - includes preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance; planning, installation and maintenance of automated irrigation systems, comprehensive lawn care and a variety of other exterior work such as concrete work, asphalt patching, fence building, and snow removal.
  • Applicant may meet the four (4) year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows:
  • A minimum of two (2) years of plumbing employment experience may be combined with correctional experience.
  • Correctional Experience must be security related duties where primary responsibilities included detaining, controlling movement and escorting inmates in a prison facility; conducting counts and searches while monitoring inmate assignments and movement throughout the day.

  • Proficiency in plumbing, building, and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to read blueprints, conduct relevant research, create material and labor list with cost estimate and implement projects from start to finish, while coordinating with other trades and shops to use resources efficiently.
  • Willingness and ability to effectively communicate while working with inmates individually and in groups, providing verbal and/or written instructions, monitoring project progress and compliance, in a highly regulated environment with firm deadlines, and mandatory reporting and record-keeping regulations.

  • Willingness and ability to train, coach, and mentor inmate workers in order to prepare them for community reentry.

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid driver's license. Drivers must maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver's license, obey traffic laws, and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle. State drivers are expected to maintain a safe driving record consistent with Colorado Division of Human Resources Universal Policy Driving Standards. Eligibility to drive a State-owned vehicle, includes holding a valid Colorado driver's license within 30 days of employment or residency change and meeting specific driving record criteria. Serious traffic violations, including DUIs or reckless driving, can disqualify drivers for up to seven years.  All State Vehicles are monitored by telematics for safe operation and employees have no reasonable expectation of privacy while using an agency State Fleet vehicle.

  • Have NO felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609. The CDOC shall not hire nor promote anyone who may have contact with an offender who has engaged in sexual abuse which includes acts, activity, and sexual behavior,  in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents.

  • Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics
