About The Position

The General Maintenance Worker II performs skilled work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and structural systems. The General Maintenance Worker II troubleshoots problems, and makes adjustments or repairs when necessary. The General Maintenance Worker II also performs routine carpentry work using hand and power tools and precision measuring and testing devices to repair or remodel existing structures according to work orders or verbal instructions. Must have a valid Driver’s License. General Duties: Performs skilled mechanical maintenance work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and refrigeration control systems by inspecting and testing elements of those systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, troubleshooting problems, and making adjustments and/or performing required repairs. Practices preventive maintenance by performing scheduled and spot checks of equipment to determine their working condition, oiling/greasing moving parts, cleaning and servicing tools and equipment as directed or specified in the operator’s manual. Operates power tools, hand tools, air compressors, jackhammers, backhoes, ditch witch, man lifts, and other tools relative to building maintenance. Works safely off ladders, scaffolding, and various man lift type equipment. Provides means of access through walls, floors, and other structures as may be required by dismantling or cutting through structural and other physical barriers in order to gain access for repairs or for new installations. Restores assigned work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing tools, materials, and debris, drop cloths, and tarpaulins used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that had been dismantled, and coordinating the cleaning, painting, or replacing tile(s) and other structural effects through which holes have been cut. Reads and interprets schematics, blueprints, and manufacturers specifications. Cleans and organizes shop areas, tool rooms, mechanical rooms, and boiler rooms as needed or directed. Performs basic plumbing work by repairing existing plumbing and pipe lines, replacing washers in valves, installing plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, toilets, water heaters, and connecting them to outlet and inlet pipes by fitting with gaskets, couplings, traps, and valves, and soldering connections to seal joints, and opening clogged drains and clogged toilets, etc. Performs basic electrical work by replacing faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, breakers, insulators and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures and equipment, installing new conduit, wiring, and electrical machinery, inspecting and testing electrical lighting, power circuits, and equipment, and maintains and repairs existing electrical wiring, equipment. Performs heating, ventilation and air conditioning ( HVAC ) work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of high and low pressure refrigerant systems, by inspecting and testing those systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, performing required repairs through replacement of inoperative parts or adjustment of HVAC controls. Preforms basic carpentry work including repair doors, window frames, floors, walls, ceilings, partitions, and office furniture. Minimizes institutional liability regarding the University’s compliance with federal regulations by complying with policies, laws and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials. Performs other duties as assigned deemed necessary to meet the needs of Marshall University including performance of work in support of other shops/trades.
