About The Position

UPMC Mercy is hiring a Full Time General Maintenance Apprentice to support our facility! This position will work second shift from 2pm-10pm with two consecutive days off. There will be minimum two GM’s on the same shift working together. The department has off hours technical support and assistance provided by rotating Group Leads on call. This position starts at 60%25 of Journeyman rate with scheduled pay increases every 6 months. Pay increases are awarded based on performance and training criteria. Preferred candidates will have experience with HVAC, electrical low voltage, and/or mechanical skills. Purpose: The General Maintenance Apprentice will learn safe operation and maintenance of HVAC systems, heat exchangers, direct digital control, pneumatic controls, ice machines, building automation system (BAS), Fire Protection Systems, Nurse Call and Pneumatic Tube Systems, Steam, Chilled Water and associated systems and equipment. The GM Apprentice must enroll, and successfully complete an Accredited Apprentice Trade program within 48 months from hiring date.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required, and successful completion of an accredited trade / technical school or equivalent is preferred.
  • Must posses the ability to respond to a variety of situations in difficult positions using ladders, catwalks, crawl spaces, etc.
  • Within 12 months from hiring date must obtain ICRA training.
  • Within 24 months from hiring date obtaining a CFC Universal Refrigeration license is preferred.
  • Within 48 months from hiring date obtaining a Stationary Engineer license or a HVAC Technician license, and other trade related licenses is preferred.
  • Must possess a drivers license.
  • Completion of a full Accredited Apprentice Trade Program
  • 48 months of employment as a GM Apprentice
  • Passing the Journeyman Competency Test
  • Act 34

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Maintain clean and safe work area, equipment rooms and shop area.
  • Record personal work orders and submit hours daily.
  • Perform all work following infection control procedures.
  • Under supervision of a journeyman technician, check all mechanical equipment for efficient, safe operation.
  • Under supervision of an engineer or refrigeration staff, inspect all air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilation equipment to identify possible deficiencies and/or malfunctions.
  • Oil and grease all parts of equipment
  • Under supervision, check water supply for chemical treatment levels.
  • Under supervision, add proper chemicals to the desired requirements.
  • Under supervision of a journeyman technician, check meters, gauges, signals lights and other warning devices for possible problems and make necessary corrections.
  • Under supervision of a journeyman electrician or engineer, inspect electrical wiring and electrical devices and make necessary repairs and corrections.
  • Under supervision, inspect mechanical devices and make any necessary repairs or corrections.
  • Progressively learn to read blueprints, instruction books and sketches, to maintain all mechanical equipment in efficient, safe working order.
  • Periodically and progressively demonstrate knowledge of all components of refrigeration system and assist journeyman in troubleshooting equipment.
