About The Position

As General Foreman - Sheet Metal, you'll serve as a senior field leader and mentor, overseeing multiple foremen, lead installers, and sheet metal crews to deliver high-quality, safe, and efficient installations of ductwork, HVAC systems, and related components on commercial projects. Reporting directly to the General Superintendent (or equivalent), you'll collaborate with project teams to align on company goals, develop schedules, manage labor/material resources, and drive profitability while training emerging foremen and advancing team capabilities. This generic role is designed for any Modigent operating company, empowering your trade expertise with leadership development, specialized training, and the opportunity to champion safety, quality, and customer satisfaction in sustainable commercial building services nationwide.

Requirements

  • Experience: 6+ years in commercial sheet metal/HVAC installation and fabrication, including 3+ years leading crews and running work; journeyman-level knowledge or ability to obtain relevant license/certification.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, apprenticeship completion, or equivalent preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license and clean driving record required; SMACNA-related certifications or welding a plus; OSHA 30-hour certification encouraged (company support provided).
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial construction settings (indoor/outdoor, mechanical rooms, rooftops, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, sharp materials, and mechanical hazards; must strictly adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, and steel-toed boots at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Occasional regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required as business needs dictate.
  • Advanced sheet metal techniques (layout, fabrication, installation, sealing, hanging, SMACNA standards).
  • Crew leadership (multiple foremen/crews), task delegation, mentoring/training, and performance monitoring.
  • Blueprint reading, material takeoff/list preparation, short- and long-term scheduling (look-aheads).
  • Safety leadership, effective communication (written/verbal) with teams, superintendents, clients, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Problem-solving, multitasking, self-motivation, punctuality, and professional demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of foremen, lead installers, and sheet metal crews to execute ductwork fabrication, layout, installation, sealing, hanging, and system integration per blueprints, specifications, SMACNA standards, and project requirements.
  • Develop proactive solutions with the General Superintendent and project team to identify and resolve potential issues before they impact schedule, budget, or quality.
  • Review projects with senior project managers/project managers after equipment/subcontractors are procured; conduct physical site surveys and report conditions/recommendations in writing as needed.
  • Assist in developing project schedules, including labor breakdowns and resource plans; coordinate with shop for production scheduling and deliveries.
  • Perform accurate material takeoffs in a timely manner to support procurement and planning.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise on-site functions: scheduling, material control, tool/equipment rentals, crane/subcontractor coordination, and daily supervision for assigned projects.
  • Ensure all site personnel comply with project procedures, safety requirements, company policies, quality expectations, and contractual standards; conduct daily safety briefings, hazard assessments, and toolbox talks.
  • Document incidents immediately, notify superintendent/project manager, recommend/implement corrective actions, and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Assure timely completion and submission of daily/weekly reports (safety/toolbox, production, preconstruction, 2-week look-ahead, project-specific) to the office.
  • Conduct job-site inspections to verify adherence to Modigent standards; participate in system startups/commissioning as needed and coordinate with contractors, engineers, subcontractors, and owners.
  • Train and develop emerging foremen and crew members on advanced sheet metal techniques, safety practices, quality standards, and career advancement.
  • Responsible for crew time submission, performance tracking, and nominating team members for promotions/incentives as appropriate.
  • Build and maintain proactive relationships with clients, subcontractors, vendors, and internal teams to support project success and future opportunities.
