About The Position

Manulife is a leading international financial services provider, helping people make decisions easier and lives better. Risk Management is defined as the continuing process to identify, analyze, evaluate potential exposure(s) to current and future loss while monitoring the effectiveness of controls to mitigate undue risk. The Underwriting Department is tasked with assessing individuals as life insurance risks. Within the Underwriting Department the Underwriting Risk Management team ensures that our Underwriting Guidelines are appropriate, up to date and being followed properly; we help to establish guidelines for any new offerings and to ensure that existing Controls protect us against any undue risk of loss, current or future. The Risk Management team is comprised of experienced underwriters who require technical underwriting knowledge to identify any underlying risk. The General Director will work closely with the Chief Underwriter and Associate Chief Underwriter while providing guidance to the Risk Management team consistent with our objectives, have oversight of day-to-day operations and ensure that all Control measures and reporting are completed.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 15 years underwriting experience.
  • Minimum 5 years Underwriting Risk Management experience.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of medical, non-medical and financial underwriting principles and practices.
  • In depth knowledge of unique estate, business and insurance planning tools and techniques.
  • In depth knowledge of current political, economic, financial and legislative events impacting risk.
  • Expert knowledge of company’s insurance product portfolio
  • Expert knowledge of reinsurance, marketplace treaties, agreements and available capacity.
  • Exceptional priority management with ability to work effectively under deadlines
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective presentation skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong creative and critical thinking skills.
  • Expert knowledge of insurance contract law and state legislative requirements as they relate to the underwriting and issue of insurance contracts.
  • High level understanding of the principles of product pricing.

  • Keep current and up to date with changes in estate/insurance planning strategies.
  • Identify departmental problems, recommend solutions and assist in implementation of change including manual updates.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Underwriter and Associate Chief Underwriter in identifying new areas of potential risk.
  • Have a complete understanding of all current underwriting guidelines and practices, to include global standards.
  • Dissect and identify new risks and establish clear pathway in developing new Controls.
  • Evaluate the results of Controls testing and identify any trends for training purposes.
  • Evaluate and identify potential risk in the underwriting environment.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends practices.

  • Ensure that Underwriting Management team receives necessary information.
