The BNSF Railway Law and Claims Department provides expert in-house counsel and collaborates with outside counsel to ensure the railroad operates safely and meets all legal and contractual obligations. Our licensed attorneys and legal professionals are dedicated to upholding the highest legal compliance standards. Additionally, our specialized Claims team promotes safety, investigates incidents, and resolves them ethically. Even though railroading is one of America’s oldest industries, BNSF remains on the cutting edge of technological innovation. We are seeking a technology-focused lawyer with expertise in Intellectual Property matters, transactions involving technology and other issues, and regulatory issues related to BNSF’s technology initiatives. The position involves managing Intellectual Property matters from the cultivation of ideas through their protection via regulatory process and, as necessary, managing related disputes. The position also involves the negotiation, drafting and review of a wide variety of agreements regarding various aspects of BNSF’s operations, including high-value transactions regarding operating and technology issues, as well as providing ongoing legal support regarding issues arising under those agreements. This position also involves occasionally providing legal counsel regarding general law and operational regulations, including research and legal advice under the supervision of senior attorneys on administrative, regulatory, data privacy, and commercial law issues. This is a full-time position located in Fort Worth, TX. For certain positions, including this one, employees can work one day per week remotely. Our leaders also foster a culture where work life balance, which requires flexibility for when life happens, is important and respected. Travel is minimal, less than 10%.

Requirements

  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
  • J.D. Degree
  • Current, active law license
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience as a practicing lawyer (in-house, law firm or government) handling complex contract negotiations and transactions
  • Experience handling Intellectual Property matters in any industry
  • Ability to handle complex and challenging assignments with extremeley short turnaround deadlines
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to build consensus and communicate compelling legal/business justification for position
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other web-based legal research tools
