About The Position

As a General Education Development (GED) Instructor, you will be primarily responsible for working with young people of varying educational achievement levels and teach the necessary skills to ensure a GED certification obtainment. This individual will assist young adults with educational opportunities that may have been missed or previously denied. This position is expected to function effectively with moderate supervision while following the guidelines given on procedures, along with agency, federal, and state regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's level degree in Education, or equivalent field of study from an accredited college;
  • At least two (2) years of experience teaching general education subjects and GED preparation to high school students, young adults, or adults across a variety of skill and learning levels;
  • Must be CPR, First Aid, and AEC certified upon hire or within 60 days of hire;
  • Demonstrated familiarity with TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) and GED standardized assessments;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with strong interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail and highly organized;
  • Must possess sufficient computer operation and technology navigation skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach basic educational topics;
  • Highly motivated and self-managed;
  • Must be willing and able to work some evenings and weekends, as needed;
  • Computer and typing skills sufficient to perform essential job functions;
  • Must be 21 years old with a valid driver's license with at least 3 years driving experience in the U.S. to operate a vehicle on behalf of Bethany. Must also pass a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check and maintain a reliable vehicle with proof of adequate insurance coverage.
  • Pass a criminal history screen, including state and local child protection agency registries;
  • Subscription to and integration of the agency Statement of Faith, Mission Statement, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality instruction to participants across various learning levels in the areas of Social Studies, Science, Math, Reading, and Reasoning through Language Arts;
  • Provide General Education Development (GED) study and preparation assistance to participants in the program in a classroom setting by using experiential learning;
  • Develop lesson plans and modify as needed throughout the year;
  • Assist with the development of an online learning/classroom platform to engage the cohort virtually;
  • Collaborate with young people of diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds to reorient their lives, develop leadership skills, and make a difference in their community;
  • Effectively grade papers and perform other administrative duties as needed;
  • Create educational projects designed to enhance the lecture experience;
  • Identify innovative solutions to teach and engage with young people;
  • Develop and establish curricula that reflects the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served;
  • Develop incentive practices that keep participants highly engaged in class;
  • Develop positive, professional relationships with other agencies and organizations that contribute to the success of the GED program;
  • Effectively tutor students on an individual basis in accordance with educational needs;
  • Recruit tutors for the program who can engage with students either in person or though video calls on platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or similar;
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure participants have a holistic learning experience through Individualized Development Plans;
  • Participate in off-site and on-site recruiting and screening of YouthBuild students;
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities;
  • Observe and evaluate student's performance, and communicate with assigned Case Managers;
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order during educational sessions;
  • Research and stay abreast of current topics in the educational field;
  • Attend internal and external trainings, and apply newly gained knowledge on the job;
  • Plan and facilitate educational curriculum in compliance with federal, state, and agency requirements;
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
