About The Position

Under the direction of Supervisor-Natural Gas Construction or designee, the Gas System Installer functions as part of a crew, investigating and repairing gas leaks and installing and replacing gas mains, services, or related equipment. A Gas System Installer Full may also direct workers in the supervisor's absence. City Utilities (CU) has been connecting the community to essential services since 1945, including electricity, clean water, natural gas, internet, and transit services.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • For Gas System Installer 2nd Year: Minimum of one-year gas pipeline construction and maintenance experience is required.
  • For Gas System Installer 2nd Year: Two or more years comparable construction and maintenance experience on underground water distribution piping may be considered in lieu of required gas experience.
  • For Gas System Installer Full: Technical or trade specific training is required.
  • For Gas System Installer Full: Two or more years of recent experience in the construction and maintenance of underground gas distribution piping is required.
  • For Gas System Installer Full: Two or more recent years comparable construction and maintenance experience on underground water distribution piping may be considered in lieu of up to one year of the required experience.
  • Must possess CU “Operator Qualification” certification or be able to achieve certification within 3 weeks.
  • Must have a valid Missouri CDL, Class A including air brakes, OR the ability to obtain a Missouri Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within six weeks of employment AND the ability to obtain a CDL, Class A including airbrakes within six months of employment.
  • Basic computer knowledge (intermediate for Gas System Installer Full).
  • Maintain adherence to all company policies.
  • Working knowledge of the installation of threaded piping and mechanical compression fittings.
  • Working knowledge of laying and bedding large diameter pipe.
  • Working knowledge of performing heat fusion and electrofusion on plastic piping systems.
  • Working knowledge of performing taps.
  • Working knowledge of purging gas.
  • Working knowledge of installing protective coatings on metallic piping systems to prevent corrosion.
  • Working knowledge of CU utilized computer systems and tough books.
  • Working knowledge of CU’s safe working practices and be good examples of it.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to make mature decisions with or without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work courteously with customers and coworkers.
  • Ability to show good judgment and be good examples of it to others.
  • Ability to bring uncontrolled and potentially hazardous gas conditions under control.
  • Ability to be dependable due to the nature of duties of the position and have good attendance.
  • Ability to lead other employees in safe work practices (for Gas System Installer Full).
  • Ability to effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems.
  • Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.
  • Must successfully complete gas construction training program for probationary employees.
  • Subject to Department of Transportation’s and/or Public Service Commission’s drug and alcohol testing requirements and Gas Operator Qualification requirements.
  • Required to wear uniform clothing provided by City Utilities, including flame retardant/arc rated clothing.
  • Must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Employee must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical or trade specific training is preferred (for Gas System Installer 2nd Year).

Responsibilities

  • Installs or replaces gas mains and services using required hand tools and equipment.
  • Fuses plastic pipe and fittings.
  • Moves gas meters as directed to ensure their accessibility for meter reading or servicing.
  • Completes daily work reports and submits time reports.
  • Operates underground piercing tools, paving breaker, air drill, tamper, and other related tools to lay, remove, and replace pipe.
  • Cleans and rakes trench line, backfills dirt, and spreads sand using hand tools.
  • May install, disconnect, or remove gas service regulators.
  • May relight appliances for customers.
  • Works with CU mobile work management system.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
  • For Gas System Installer Full, increased ownership in the tasks and responsibilities listed above.
