About The Position

We are seeking a motivated and safety-conscious Gas Plant Operator Co‑op Student who is eager to gain practical, hands-on experience in Gas Plant operations. This role is ideal for a student interested in Power, or Chemical Engineering and looking to develop real-world experience at a producing Renewable Natural Gas Plant, particularly in blowers & compressor operations, Thermal Oxidizer, and flare systems. The Gas Plant Operator Co‑op Student will support the operations team with field-based and office-based activities, including equipment monitoring, data collection, inspections, reporting, and engineering support related to the whole plant. This role offers exposure to regulatory compliance, operational best practices, and engineering projects that contribute to producing renewable gas and optimized plant uptime. Reporting to the RNG Plant Manager, the student will be based in the Ridge RNG Plant based in Blenheim, Ontario. With guidance and mentorship from experienced licensed Power Engineers, Compressor Operator, Industrial Maintenance Technicians and operations staff, the Gas Plant Operator Co-op Student will:

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary Engineering or Applied Science program (Chemical Production & Power, Environmental, Mechanical, or related discipline).
  • Eligible for a co‑op or internship placement through an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Strong interest in plant operations and renewable gas generation.
  • Willingness to perform field-based work in outdoor and industrial environments.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and willingness to learn.
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and basic technical writing skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with data analysis is an asset.
  • Valid Provincial Driver’s License (or ability to obtain one before starting).
  • Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual (English/French) is an asset but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with daily operations at the gas plant, including inspections, troubleshooting, and contractor supervision.
  • Support maintenance activities: develop work plans, prepare and close work orders on time/schedule, inspect equipment, participate in problem solving and root cause analysis, initiate improvement action plans.
  • Monitor and improve equipment performance using tools like data trending, vibration analysis, infrared inspections, and gas analyzers.
  • Experience in SCADA systems, plant process safety, permit to work, controls, and instrumentation.
  • Apply principles of general mathematics and chemistry in gas plant operations.
  • Gain experience in basic electrical circuits, motors and instrumentation.
  • Apply the principles of W.H.M.I.S., TDG, OHSA and standard personal protective equipment.
  • Participate in field work, including site visits, construction observations, and monitoring activities.
  • Perform 4th Class level operating engineering calculations
  • Assist with the review and organization of monitoring reports, operational data, and inspection records.
  • Help develop and update site operating plans when applicable, including safety, emergency response, stormwater, and spill prevention plans.
  • Apply the applicable Power Engineering Codes, Acts and Regulation for given work situations.
  • Identify process piping, flanges, fittings and their uses.
  • Read and understand P&ID, equipment general arrangement drawings.
  • Familiar with the construction and use of relief valves and rupture discs
  • Attend meetings with internal teams, consultants, and (when appropriate) regulatory agencies as a learning opportunity.
  • Perform basic steam thermodynamic calculations relevant to gas plants.
  • Comply with procedures for safe vessel entry, tagout/lockout, and other safety issues
  • Support special projects related to the gas plant, thermal oxidizers and flares.
  • Operate and troubleshoot thermal oxidizers, flares, blowers & compressors.
