About The Position

Chautauqua Visual Arts Galleries department includes galleries host several curated exhibitions in Strohl Art Center, Fowler-Kellogg Art Center, and the Melvin Johnson Sculpture Garden. The galleries and outdoor garden focus on an array of diverse contemporary exhibitions, created by some of the most outstanding visual artists working today. The Gallery Store represents artists and artisans from around the world. This museum quality store offers jewelry, leather goods, glass, wood, ceramic and textile works carefully and creatively designed. The online store is designed to serve those who can’t visit in person. The Chautauqua Visual Arts is part of the Performing and Visual Arts department, whose mission is to expand the lives of our audience (and employees) within and beyond the Institution’s gates through the power of the performing and visual arts.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patrons, ascertain patron’s wants or needs and answer questions regarding merchandise.
  • Show, describe and recommend merchandise to patrons to facilitate sales.
  • Assist in creating a safe, pleasant, and convenient gallery environment.
  • Able to provide general information about Chautauqua Institution.
  • Operate a POS system to compute sale prices, total purchases, process cash or credit payment and provide customer with proper sales receipt and change.
  • Ensure accurate records of sales transactions and / or refunds in accordance with department polices.
  • Knowledgeable about department policies regarding payment, exchanges and security practices.
  • Manage the CVA Craft Gallery and replenish inventory when needed.
  • Create price lists and Artists' books for all exhibitions.
  • Work closely with senior staff to install and de-install exhibitions.
  • Help to manage general office duties.

Benefits

  • Chautauqua Institution will provide a $500 referral bonus (less taxes) for active employees referring a new candidate who is hired and remains employed for at least 90-days from the first physical date of work. In the case of seasonal positions working less than 6-months, the new candidate must remain actively employed for at least 30-days from the first physical date of work and until the closing date of the season. The closing date of the season is the last Sunday in August.
  • Employees will receive a traditional Chautauqua gate pass, free of cost, which provides access to many of our programs at the Amphitheater.
