Perform necessary activities under the direct guidance of the teacher. The role requires working under the direct guidance of the classroom teacher unless otherwise assigned to another supervisor. In settings involving students with disabilities, assistants shall assist students with toileting, catheterization, feeding, and other self-help activities as required. The position involves assisting individual pupils and small groups in developing academic skills, performing clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials, making reports, checking papers, and recording grades, and maintaining student records as directed by the classroom teacher. Assistants will administer diagnostic tools as directed by the teacher, assist in preparing the classroom and organizing instructional materials and equipment, and monitor the classroom when the teacher must attend meetings or provide consultation. The role also includes attending in-service and faculty meetings when directed, assisting in the supervision of students on bus trips, and performing lunchroom, recess/playground, before or after school duty. Special Education Assistants are in daily contact with other educational assistants, teachers, students, administration, the general public, and other work-related personnel. The ability to handle complaints, express a service-oriented attitude, communicate effectively with others, and work with limited supervision is vital.
