About The Position

This position is for a Funeral Director/Embalmer who will compassionately facilitate funeral arrangement discussions with the next of kin of the deceased and preside over visitation, funeral, and graveside services in accordance with family wishes, company expectations, and legal requirements. The role may also involve embalming responsibilities. As a licensed Funeral Director, the individual is responsible for ensuring compliance with all mortuary, health, and vital statistics regulations within the funeral establishment(s). Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited school or college of mortuary science.
  • Current Funeral Director and Embalmer dual license within the practicing state.
  • Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required to operate company owned vehicles.
  • Cognitive Ability including reason, plan, identify problems, learn quickly, learn from experience, and appropriately apply learning to new situations.
  • Process and results oriented, motivated to keep projects moving ahead by removing obstacles and exploring alternatives.
  • Positive attitude, a drive to continually advance understanding of the industry and business, and highly self-motivated.
  • Ability to build professional and trusting business relations.
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Compassionately facilitate funeral arrangement discussions with deceased next of kin.
  • Preside over visitation, funeral, and graveside services in accordance with family’s wishes, company expectations, and local, state, or federal laws.
  • Perform Embalming responsibilities.
  • Ensure compliance with all mortuary, health, and vital statistics regulation compliance within the funeral establishment(s).
  • Receive or initiate calls to deceased next of kin, obtaining or confirming contact information, discussing needs, scheduling arrangement appointments, and emailing confirmations.
  • Perform removals or transfers adhering to company standards and processes.
  • Care for deceased in a respectful manner and update removal status in proprietary software.
  • Greet next of kin and escort them to the meeting space.
  • Initiate and facilitate Arrangements Conference, assessing needs and summarizing desired outcomes.
  • Discuss available life insurance and benefits, such as Veteran benefits.
  • Promote funeral, cemetery, and crematory services and merchandise (e.g., catering, flowers, music, Ever Lasting Memory products).
  • Transition Arrangement Conference to Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor for presenting cemetery property and merchandise options, pricing, and contract completion (or perform these responsibilities in their absence).
  • Review and authorize merchandise and service contract revisions.
  • Confirm authorization to proceed with service arrangements.
  • Preside as Master of Ceremonies (MC) for visitation, funeral, or graveside services professionally and consistently with Company standards.
  • Be present for graveside services included in the purchase agreement.
  • Be present when the casket containing a human body is placed in a grave, crypt, or burial vault and verify personal belongings are removed from the deceased prior to burial.
  • Visually inspect deceased, adjust casket dressing, attire or makeup, or communicate concerns to preparation staff.
  • Visually inspect Services Arrangements against contractual agreements and next of kin expectations; initiate corrective action and provide instruction or guidance to services team members as appropriate.
  • Interact with the family to fulfill death care requests and obtain leads for pre-need services.
  • Perform event planning responsibilities including resource planning and ordering music, flowers, or catering.
  • Produce MeM products such as scanning photos, ordering memorabilia or stationary, creating electronic presentations, writing obituaries, and creating on-line memorials.
  • Prepare event rooms prior to events, including setting up chairs, tables, flowers, guest books, and décor.
  • Clean event rooms post-event, store items, identify property in need of repair, and courier/deliver family memorabilia.
  • Perform attendant duties such as parking lot attendant, driver, usher, pallbearer, or courier.
  • Attend community or charity events to represent and promote the location or market.
  • Verify identification and review embalming authorization following company processes and procedures.
  • Clean and embalm body adhering to hazardous waste procedures, using scalpels, pumps, tubes, and equipment to replace bodily fluids/waste with embalming fluids.
  • Perform restorations, styling hair, applying cosmetics, dressing body, and other preparation required for human remains.
  • Verify appropriate casket and lining according to contract.
  • Dress casket and lay deceased.
  • Update status in proprietary software.
  • Maintain preparation room, clean soiled equipment, properly dispose of hazardous waste, and promote a safe work environment.
  • Inventory and reorder supplies.
  • Work under general guidance, applying licensure to business environment and complying with regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with peers or manager for assistance and guidance.
  • Exhibit accountability for behaviors.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Take initiative to discuss assignments, expectations, priorities and deadlines, and seek guidance and coaching from manager.
  • Notify manager when workload is light and volunteer for additional work.
  • Adjust effectively to work within new work structures, processes, requirements or cultures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
