About The Position

The Fund Strategy Financial Analytics Associate plays a key role in delivering data-driven analysis to support fund strategy and help enhance the firm's data and analytics infrastructure over time. The Financial Analytics Associate will play a crucial role on the Fund Strategy team and make an immediate and sustained impact. You'll use data to support new fund planning, optimize fund and portfolio construction, and help strategize the distribution and recycling of public holdings. You'll also conduct post-deployment analyses to improve future fund deployment decisions. This role will collaborate with teams such as the software group, investor relations, finance, compliance, and tax to transform complex financial datasets into predictive, decision-grade intelligence. The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, high attention to detail, and a background in data analysis. The ideal candidate will also have a background in data analysis at a finance company (investment or commercial bank, venture capital, hedge fund, or similar). We're looking for a data-oriented problem solver – someone who enjoys not only numbers and the puzzle behind them, but also building durable systems, improving data quality, and translating complex financial data into insights that directly shape decisions across the firm. The Fund Strategy team focuses on four core areas: New Fund Formation Modeling and Strategy – Developing models to forecast fund dynamics Fund Management – Managing deployment pacing, portfolio construction, portfolio strategy, and life-of-fund responsibilities Capital Management – Optimizing capital allocation and financial planning Cash and Stock Distributions – Strategizing on distribution methods to maximize returns This role requires an in-office presence 3 days a week in our San Francisco, CA office.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of relevant experience, preferably in data analytics, with alternative backgrounds in investment banking (sector coverage or M&A), management consulting, or accounting also welcomed
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Finance, Accounting, or a technical field preferred but not required
  • Demonstrate a critical eye and keen attention to detail for written prose and charts, tables and spreadsheets and the ability to stay on top of changing data/facts across multiple documents with ease
  • Strong writing skills: The ability to communicate effectively through the written word is a critical skill
  • Candidate must be authorized to work in and be living in the United States
  • Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse teams

Nice To Haves

  • Comfort learning and applying tools like Python, Javascript, Google Apps Script, Google Collab, and various data libraries a plus but not required

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Fund Strategy team with all aspects of partnering with business units across the firm, proactively identifying analytical needs and translating them into clear, actionable outputs.
  • You'll provide analyses of fund investments, help with fund-level cash flow planning, and offer insights on fund performance. Activities will include working with cross-functional teams, creating presentations and reporting, and building financial models
  • Learn how the team's financial data analysis drives strategic decision-making in areas such as investment tracking, portfolio construction, follow-on investing trends, and fund performance. Help provide real-time performance data to investor relations and business unit teams
  • Leverage data from internal and third-party sources to create analyses that assist key stakeholders with important decisions
  • Work with technical partners to help design, build, and maintain data pipelines and internal tools that support financial data integration, transformation, and reporting, taking on more responsibility as your technical skills develop
  • Help build dashboards and simple interfaces that make financial data insights accessible to non-technical stakeholders, using modern visualization tools and, over time, basic web frameworks
  • Partner with the a16z Software Group team to ensure seamless data operations and help design and manage data pipelines used by fund management that align with the firm's data infrastructure
  • Work with the central data team to ensure information feeds correctly into the central data lake, access controls are maintained, and user-permission and access management processes are robust and well-documented
  • Support cross-functional stakeholders across the firm and assist with data, automation, and software projects as they arise
