About The Position

At Atom Computing, we build quantum computers using arrays of optically trapped neutral atoms that will empower customers to achieve unprecedented computational breakthroughs. Join a world-class team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals to advance the state-of-the-art in quantum computing. Atom Computing is seeking a FPGA engineer to assist in the implementation of the control systems for our quantum computers. This position will report to the Control Systems HW & FW Engineering Manager.

Requirements

  • BS or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Experimental Physics, or a closely related field.
  • 3–5+ years of relevant professional or postgraduate experience in FPGA design, verification, and hardware integration.
  • Adaptable & Collaborative: You thrive in a start-up environment where you can take ownership of complex problems, drive engineering rigor, and help build the processes of the future.
  • RTL Expertise: Deep proficiency in RTL design and verification, with a strong emphasis on SystemVerilog.
  • Architecture & Tooling: Proven experience with the Xilinx/AMD Vivado ecosystem, targeting advanced SoCs (Zynq and explicitly RFSoC).
  • Digital Circuit Design: Strong foundational expertise in FPGA architecture, microprocessors, and high-speed digital circuit functions.
  • Hardware Integration: Hands-on experience integrating, debugging, and testing prototype electronics assemblies using laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers).
  • Software & Scripting: Solid programming skills in Python, C, or C++ within a Linux environment for simulation, test automation, and hardware control.
  • Modern Workflows: Familiarity with Git version control, CI/CD pipelines for firmware validation, and modern FPGA design best practices.
  • Domain Curiosity: A strong willingness to learn atomic, optical, laser physics, and quantum mechanics concepts to put your engineering work into a deep-tech context.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience designing and testing Software-Defined Radio (SDR), radio-frequency circuits, high-speed ADCs/DACs, and working within MicroTCA ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Drive Core Development: Design, implement, and test FPGA-based functions for high-speed arbitrary waveform generation, image acquisition, digital control loops, and communication interfaces.
  • Leverage Advanced Architectures: Build anœd scale firmware for state-of-the-art platforms, specifically utilizing AMD RFSoC and MicroTCA-based architectures to transition our systems toward commercial deployment.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner closely with quantum physicists and hardware engineers to translate experimental program requirements into robust, scalable functional block specifications.
  • Execute RTL Design & Verification: Perform rigorous logic design and verification within the Xilinx Vivado ecosystem, utilizing SystemVerilog and IP Catalog.
  • Automate & Validate: Architect and automate comprehensive test procedures - develop SystemVerilog and cocotb simulation models and regression tests as well as system level hardware tests to be included in CI/CD pipeline integration.
  • Drive System Reliability: Support the uptime of our commercial quantum computers by monitoring field performance, debugging complex hardware/firmware integrations, and engineering permanent solutions to root-cause outages.
