About The Position

Monterra is expanding its business to establish an AI-native engineering services company, assembling a team of electrical engineers and building proprietary AI engineering assistants. This Founding Professional Engineer role is unique, combining traditional electrical engineering tasks, such as drafting and stamping permit-ready drawings for EV charging projects, with a significant focus on AI collaboration. The successful candidate will work closely with the product and software engineering team to encode their expertise into an AI design engine, develop tools to enhance productivity, and contribute to the product roadmap. The ultimate goal is to reimagine engineering service delivery by enabling human engineers and AI assistants to work together for unprecedented quality and speed.

Requirements

  • PE license in high-volume EV deployment states (e.g., CA, MA, TX, NY, etc.); willingness to obtain additional state licenses as needed.
  • 7+ years of electrical design experience, with demonstrated experience producing permit-ready drawing packages (site plans, SLDs, panel schedules, load calculations).
  • Deep working knowledge of NEC and experience navigating AHJ-specific requirements.
  • Experience with EV charging infrastructure design (DCFC and/or L2 installations, utility interconnection, load management, light civil & structural design).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills: ability to articulate engineering rules to teammates who are not experts in your area of expertise.
  • Proficient with CAD and BIM tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with CAD automation, scripting, or parametric design tools.
  • Comfort working with AI tools - not because you'll be coding, but because you'll be collaborating with AI systems daily.

Responsibilities

  • Produce, stamp, and deliver permit-ready electrical drawing packages for customers, specifically for EV charging projects (site plans, SLDs, panel schedules, load calculations), ensuring engineering quality and AHJ compliance.
  • Collaborate directly with customers to understand requirements and iterate on designs based on feedback.
  • Document design decisions, logic, rules, and AHJ-specific requirements to train and coach the AI engineering assistant.
  • Develop standardized templates, symbol libraries, and drawing conventions that will form the foundation of automated output.
  • Work directly with the product and engineering team as the subject matter expert to communicate and clarify engineering rules, requirements, and knowledge.
  • Contribute to the product roadmap by identifying and informing on tedious workflows that can be improved.
  • Provide feedback and perform quality control on the AI engineering assistant's output, validating results and testing tools within the drawing production workflow.
  • Maintain a structured correction log, documenting every issue with root cause, code reference, and AHJ context to feed back into the system.
  • Develop playbooks for the AI engineering assistant, including review checklists and quality standards for different project types and jurisdictions.
  • Scale engineering throughput by drastically increasing the number of stamped drawings delivered as AI output quality improves and tedious work is handled by the AI assistant.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Meaningful early-stage equity.
  • Health insurance.
  • Vision insurance.
  • Dental insurance.
  • Commuter benefits.
  • Unlimited PTO.
