About The Position

The Former/Fitter plays a critical role in the manufacturing and construction industries by assembling, fitting, and securing metal or wooden components to create precise frameworks and structures. This position requires a deep understanding of technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to ensure that all parts are accurately fabricated and assembled according to project requirements. The Former/Fitter is responsible for preparing materials, cutting, shaping, and joining components using various hand and power tools, ensuring structural integrity and quality standards are met. Collaboration with engineers, welders, and other tradespeople is essential to coordinate efforts and troubleshoot any issues that arise during the fabrication process. Ultimately, the Former/Fitter contributes to the successful completion of projects by delivering well-constructed frameworks that serve as the foundation for further assembly or installation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Proven experience as a Former/Fitter or in a similar fabrication or assembly role.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments.
  • Strong understanding of safety standards and practices in a workshop or construction environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a relevant apprenticeship or vocational training program.
  • Experience working with welding and metal fabrication techniques.
  • Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Certification in occupational safety or related fields.
  • Ability to work with a variety of materials including steel, aluminum, and wood.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret and analyze technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine the correct dimensions and assembly methods.
  • Measure, cut, shape, and fit metal or wooden components using hand tools, power tools, and machinery.
  • Assemble and secure parts by welding, bolting, riveting, or other fastening techniques to create structural frameworks.
  • Inspect and verify the accuracy and quality of assembled components to ensure compliance with safety and design standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers, welders, and other tradespeople to resolve fabrication challenges and optimize assembly processes.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment by following all safety protocols and proper handling of tools and materials.
  • Document work progress and report any discrepancies or issues to supervisors promptly.
