State of CaliforniaFresno, CA

About The Position

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is recruiting to fill approximately 150 temporary Defensible Space Inspector (Forestry Aide) positions on a statewide basis. Primary duties of these positions include performance of defensible space inspections and interacting with the public to provide fire prevention information. All appointments are temporary and will not become permanent. Individuals who meet the minimum qualifications listed below and willing to work up to nine (9) months are encouraged to apply. SPECIAL NOTE: The Forestry Aide classification is a seasonal class where only temporary appointments are made. In accordance with the California State Constitution, no person may serve in one or more positions under a temporary appointment longer than 9 months in 12 consecutive months. Therefore, all time served in temporary appointments (for example, CAL FIRE's Firefighter I) during the 12 consecutive month period will count towards this 9 month maximum. Applicants may be selected by resume review. (A resume review is a structured resume evaluation process. This process competitively evaluates a candidate's qualifications presented in the application and resume in relation to the requirements of the job.)

Requirements

  • Either I Education: Completion of at least 12 semester units or 18 quarter units from a recognized accredited college or university in forestry or fire science, natural resource management, conservation, or a closely related subject.
  • Or II Three (3) months of experience with public or private entities performing sub-professional work in forestry, fire prevention, fire suppression and control, natural resource management, or other related work.
  • The incumbent is required to wear respiratory protection equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The use of such equipment may place a physiological burden on the incumbent that varies with the type of equipment used, the job and workplace conditions in which the equipment is used, and the medical status of the incumbent. As such, California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CalOSHA) requires that the incumbent be annually medically cleared to be fit-tested for respiratory protection equipment. This clearance process consists of a comprehensive medical evaluation including a review of the incumbent's medical history, a complete physical examination, and vision, hearing, spirometry, and exercise treadmill tests.
  • Duties involve field work requiring physical performance calling for above-average ability, endurance, and superior condition, including occasional demand for extraordinarily strenuous activities in emergencies, under adverse environmental conditions, and over extended periods of time; requires running, walking, difficult climbing, jumping, twisting, bending and lifting over 25 pounds; and the pace of work is typically set by the emergency.
