About The Position

The Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) is creating a safer Montana through Accountability, Rehabilitation and Empowerment. The Food Service Staff are responsible for supervising and training offenders in the preparation and serving of meals for consumption by 90 offenders, 35 state employees at the Flathead Valley Reentry Center (Prerelease Center) in Kalispell, MT. This requires knowledge related to security, food handling and safety, management of institutional equipment, proportion sizes, and inventory management. This position will supervise and train a constantly changing offender work force in large quantity preparation, cooking and baking as well as maintenance of health and sanitation standards as established by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services to ensure the education of offenders while meeting menu, health and safety requirements.  It will aid in establishing offender work schedules to ensure the smooth and orderly operation of the kitchen. This position will assist in coordination with other MDOC Divisions to order food supplies. The position will collaborate with nursing staff, and co-workers and use religious information to ensure the availability of special needs menus and make necessary menu and operational changes based on available information and knowledge of food service requirements, policies, laws and standards.  The position will assist in ensuring the accuracy of all incoming and out-going stock, handling emergencies/changes created by supply shortages, equipment failures, contamination, theft and/or prep work requirements. This position may be required to work non-typical work hours (other than Monday through Friday 8am-5pm) and is located in a correctional facility.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalency required
  • Two years of experience in large-scale food p reparations and service
  • Successful completion of Serv -Safe during the first six-month probationary period
  • Strong management ability is needed to deal effectively and professionally with offenders

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in food service management or a closely related field is preferred.
  • One year of supervisory experience is preferred.
