About The Position

The Wisconsin Union is seeking an Assistant Manager to join its Union South and Memorial Union restaurant teams. This leadership role is ideal for individuals who thrive in a fast-paced, team-driven environment and are passionate about food, people, and creating memorable guest experiences. During the academic year, the position is based at Union South, transitioning to Memorial Union during the summer months. The Assistant Manager supports the General Manager in overseeing daily operations, ensuring exceptional customer service, and supervising staff, all while upholding high standards of food quality, cleanliness, and safety. This role is crucial for team performance, operational efficiency, and guest satisfaction, working alongside professionals and students to lead a high-quality food operation for the UW Madison community. Successful candidates will have prior restaurant leadership experience and demonstrate strong communication, organizational, and team-building skills.

Requirements

  • 1-year of supervisory experience in a full-service food operation – restaurant or catering
  • 1-year of experience working in an establishment serving alcohol
  • Excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • ServSafe Certificate required or able to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Alcohol Server License required or able to obtain within 6 months of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Supervision and oversight of operations with direct supervision of two or more managers
  • Experience leading teams of more than 20 employees

Responsibilities

  • Monitors adherence to federal, state, campus, and local food safety regulations, policies, and procedures, identifies needs and makes recommendations for improvement to leadership
  • Assists with unit budget monitoring, management of inventory levels, and staff training
  • Leads and provides exceptional customer service, answers questions, and provides information regarding food preparation, catering, and associated activities
  • Selects, develops, implements and schedules logistics and menus for daily and catering operations
  • Develops, implements and oversees workflow components, and assigns and coordinates the day-to-day activities of food service staff
  • Enforces alcohol policy and law through carding operations on the Terrace
  • Memorial Union Terrace Summer Operations - locates to these units from May to September - increased schedule demands and responsibilities
