About The Position

As a Food Safety Specialist II, you will play a critical role in supporting store operations by ensuring consistent implementation and maintenance of food safety practices across all retail locations
In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal standards, conducting audits, assisting with incident investigations, and partnering with operational teams to foster a strong culture of food safety. You will collaborate with store leadership, regional operations, store care, internal audit teams, and external vendors to monitor performance, support training initiatives, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement
Success in this role requires a strong foundation in HACCP principles, a thorough understanding of federal, state, and local food safety regulations, and hands-on experience with retail food safety programs.

Position reports into our Store Support Office in Phoenix with 50% travel to stores bi-weekly.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Public Health, Environmental Health, or a related field; equivalent experience considered
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in food safety, quality assurance, or regulatory compliance within a grocery, retail, or foodservice environment
• HACCP certification required; CP-FS certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)
• Strong knowledge of HACCP, FDA Food Code, and relevant local/state regulatory requirements
• Strong understanding of in-store operations, especially in perishable departments (produce, meat, deli, bakery)
• Proven problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities with effective time management in high-demand environments
• Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to support and influence operational teams Ability to design and deliver effective training materials and SOPs using adult learning principles.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with audit or compliance software is a plus
• Ability to stand, walk, and conduct physical audits in active retail environments
• Must be able to travel regularly to stores; some overnight travel may be required
• Able to lift and move objects up to 40 lbs
• Willingness to work in varying environmental conditions including cold storage and food prep areas

Responsibilities

• Analyze audit and health department inspection results and collaborate with store and operations teams to develop and execute corrective action plans
• Conduct regular in-store food safety and sanitation assessments to verify compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of SOPs, training tools, and continuous improvement initiatives for food safety programs
• Partner with store and regional operations leadership to ensure consistent implementation of food safety standards across all locations
• Assist during health department inspections and evaluate inspection data to identify compliance trends and recommend improvements
• Support operational teams in maintaining compliance with regulations, including temperature controls, allergen management, sanitation protocols, and safe food handling
• Provide food safety and compliance support during store openings, remodels, and operational transitions
• Investigate food safety incidents and customer complaints alongside store operations to ensure timely and effective resolution.
• Identify and communicate trends, recurring issues, and improvement opportunities to the Food Safety Director and operational stakeholders
• Collaborate with merchandising, supply chain, and legal teams to address food safety risks and compliance initiatives
• Support documentation and reporting of required food safety training compliance. Monitor and verify execution of product recalls, withdrawals, and foodborne illness response protocols at the store level
• Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on food safety regulations, legislation, trends, and foodborne illness prevention
• Perform additional projects and tasks as assigned by the Food Safety Director
