About The Position

The Safety Specialist II will focus on improving Health and Safety at the Ultium Cells facility by using his/her experience to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control hazards in the workplace and engage employees in the development of a strong H&S culture. Functions as an expert resource to teams for consistent implementation of company H&S standards and programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience evaluating and improving Safety and Health programs in a manufacturing environment preferred
  • Positive attitude, self-driven, strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated effectiveness in accomplishing goals
  • Must be comfortable working in a diverse or multi-cultural team setting
  • Strong knowledge of and experience working with OSHA and state/local regulations and requirements
  • Ability to understand and interpret voluntary consensus standards
  • Demonstrated project management and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge in advanced manufacturing technology (automation), chemicals, and electrical safety
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating technical data, test results, and reports
  • Strong hazard recognition skills
  • Technical writing and presentation skills

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certification (GSP, CSP, CIH or ASP) preferred
  • Previous experience in a startup environment and Union setting is advantageous

Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of site’s process safety management program
  • Coach and train other employees and the plant leadership team about process safety requirements
  • Conduct daily line walks to ensure H&S practices are being observed and to note any at-risk behaviors, unsafe conditions, faulty equipment or non-compliance with any H&S related policies/regulations
  • Participate in design-in safety process by attending risk assessments, supporting Ultium’s equipment commissioning process, and providing guidance to engineering and installation teams as needed
  • Conduct new equipment reviews, mechanical risk assessments and ergonomic risk assessments
  • Develop and deliver safety training as needed
  • Conduct new hire orientation, contractor safety and other H&S related training topics
  • Engage with/provide guidance to Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and support functions to support risk-reduction in the workplace
  • Ensure effective hazard identification and mitigation for plant operations and administrative offices
  • Develop/update site specific programs to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations
  • Lead emergency response drills and critiques
  • Ensure timely communication of safety issues/concerns to department leadership
  • Evaluates workplace compliance regarding local, state and federal regulations
  • Lead cross-functional teams to drive improvements across the organization
  • Oversee one or more plant-wide safety and health programs and act as a champion of the sites workplace safety system
  • Participate in incident investigations and track corrective actions
  • Actively participates in and supports the continuous improvement process
  • Perform radiation and industrial hygiene monitoring and sampling such as noise measurements, air sampling, temperature monitoring, air flow monitoring, confined space sampling, etc.
  • Supports implementation of the GM/Ultium Workplace Safety System
  • This role will support 2nd shift operations (~2pm-10:30pm) schedule subject to change
  • Ability to work selected weekends, holidays, and rotation shift
  • Additional duties as assigned
