About The Position

The Food Safety & Quality Systems Specialist supports the operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of FSQA data acquisition and reporting systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability. This role applies knowledge of data management, computerized reporting, and technical documentation to define data structures, manage system capacity, maintain data integrity, and develop custom reports. The Specialist partners closely with IT and programming teams to support system enhancements while maintaining daily operations across both commercial and internally developed systems that enable FSQA management and operational effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field with 2+ years of experience in SQL reporting or web application development, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience developing web-based reports and applications using HTML/HTML5, ASP/ASP.NET, Visual Basic/VB.Net, and MS SQL Server.
  • Strong experience with enterprise relational database management systems, SQL development, and complex query design.
  • Working knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming concepts and web application architecture principles.
  • Ability to understand business processes and effectively translate data into meaningful insights and solutions.
  • Demonstrated analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and sense of urgency.
  • Experience developing reports that merge data and operational metrics to support decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts and deliver training to users at varying levels.
  • Ability to work independently, proactively, and effectively in fast-paced environments with ambiguity and changing priorities.
  • Skillful at working across organizational boundaries while remaining respectful, approachable, and team-oriented.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% as business needs require and complete required documentation in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of SPC and statistics, preferred.
  • Background in food or food production environment, a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Process & Systems Understanding: Demonstrate a strong understanding of FSQA processes and how they integrate with broader organizational systems, priorities, and objectives.
  • Problem Solving & Planning: Take a tactical, solution-oriented approach to problem solving while contributing to strategic planning and determining appropriate plans of action based on defined objectives.
  • Plant Support & Training: Provide technical assistance and training to plant teams on data management, reporting, program usage, and FSQA business systems.
  • Stakeholder Partnership: Build strong relationships with business stakeholders, understand their priorities and goals, and effectively support FSQA initiatives across the organization.
  • System Operations & Data Integrity: Maintain daily operations of FSQA data and database systems to ensure uninterrupted data collection and reporting across plants and departments.
  • Technical Development & Tools: Develop and maintain solutions using tools such as SQL, Visual Basic, ASP.Net, Excel, Access, or other technologies within the Smithfield IT ecosystem.
  • Reporting & Analytics Development: Create and maintain reports, dashboards, web pages, applications, and tracking tools (e.g., scorecards, frequency reports, complaint reports, inventory observations) to support data-driven decision making.
  • Documentation & Standards: Ensure all reports, systems, and processes are fully documented and meet FSQA and organizational standards.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute meaningfully to continuous improvement efforts by streamlining systems, simplifying reporting, and eliminating unnecessary or redundant reports where feasible.
