About The Position

The National Synchrotron Light Source is a state-of-the-art, medium-energy (3-billion-electron-volt, or GeV) electron storage ring that produces x-rays up to 10,000 times brighter than the NSLS. The mission of the National Synchrotron Light Source is to provide extremely bright x-rays for basic and applied research in biology and medicine, materials and chemical sciences, geosciences and environmental sciences, and nanoscience. To support this program, the NSLSII must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate and focus electron and X-ray beams. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the NSLSII scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The NSLSII supports an international user community of over 2,200 researchers from 400 universities. The NSLSII performs all these functions in an environmentally responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach. Position Description The NSLS-II Beam Operations group is seeking an applicant who will be trained as a Floor Coordinator and cross trained as an Operator. The open position requires shift work with a shift lasting 12 hours plus ½ hour dedicated to shift turnover. Shifts begin at 8 am and 8 pm for 2 consecutive days followed by 2 off days. Shifts will include some weekends and holidays. The open position will be primarily overnight. Floor Coordinator duties involve safe operation of NSLS-II beam line experiments including safety system checkouts and monitoring user safety & conduct of experiments at the beam lines. Other Floor Coordinator responsibilities include responding to machine and building emergencies as a point of contact for fire/rescue, acting as local emergency coordinator, and responding to non-emergency machine operations issues. The Floor Coordinators are a point of contact to monitor processes for beamline staff and accelerator system experts during off-hours. Floor Coordinators also complete regular building tours to identify equipment problems and provide oversight of building safety. Overnight shifts include one Floor Coordinator while day shifts include two. Following a training period that will include familiarization with procedures, the candidate will be assigned to a shift partnered with an experienced Floor Coordinator, who will complete the hands-on portion of the training. Operator duties include operating the NSLS-II facility 24/7 during periods of user beam and accelerator studies. A smaller staff of Operators will remain on-shift during extended shutdown periods. Operators use Control System Studio (CSS) to control and monitor all aspects of machine operations. Overnight shifts include two operators with one operator designated as Lead, who assume responsibility for safe operation of the facility. The other operator on the overnight shift will provide support to the Lead and respond to issues outside of the control room. One Operator is assigned to each day shift and takes the role as Lead. The position will include shift differential pay and some amount of overtime pay is typical.
