About The Position

Be part of a family-owned business with 65+ years in irrigation/landscaping. Maintain a fleet of ~80 vehicles/equipment (service trucks, light-duty vehicles, trailers, small engines, skid steers, loaders, pumps, irrigation tools) supporting 90–95 people. Hands-on lead role: preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, preparing for in-house NY State vehicle inspections once licensed as an inspection station.

Requirements

  • 5+ years (10+ preferred) hands-on automotive, fleet, or machinery mechanic experience.
  • Expertise in gasoline/diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical diagnostics (including CAN bus where applicable), drivetrain repairs.
  • Valid NY State driver's license (clean record preferred).
  • NY State Certified Motor Vehicle Inspector (Group 1/Safety Inspector) certification required (or ability/willingness to obtain promptly; company supports licensing for private fleet inspections).
  • Strong problem-solving/diagnostic skills (real troubleshooting, not just parts replacement).
  • Physical ability to lift heavy objects, work in varying outdoor conditions, perform field repairs.
  • Reliable, punctual, safety-conscious, organized with good communication for clear reporting.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with heavy equipment, construction machinery, skid steers/loaders, small engines, trucks/light vehicles, irrigation equipment.
  • ASE certifications, CDL, welding/fabrication skills, major component rebuild experience.
  • Fleet maintenance background in service industries (landscaping, irrigation, construction).
  • Comfort working on vehicles and specialized machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Complete preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs on gasoline/diesel trucks, vans, trailers, small engines, landscaping/construction machinery.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, drivetrain issues in shop/field (job-site repairs in busy seasons).
  • Perform independent diagnostics using scan tools, multimeters, pressure gauges, OEM software.
  • Handle major repairs (engine rebuilds, transmission work, hydraulic overhauls, component replacements) as needed.
  • Prioritize/manage multiple repairs efficiently in fast-paced, high-volume setting.
  • Maintain accurate repair logs, parts inventory, documentation for compliance/efficiency.
  • Conduct (or prepare to conduct) NY State annual safety/emissions inspections once facility is licensed.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating with operations teams.
  • Follow strict safety standards and company protocols on every task.
  • Be available for overtime, emergency field repairs, peak-season demands.
