The Fleet & Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, repairing, and optimizing the company’s fleet vehicles and construction equipment to ensure maximum reliability and uptime across active solar construction projects. This role is primarily shop-based in South Dakota, with occasional travel to project sites as needed to support field operations. The Mechanic plays a critical role in operational success by minimizing downtime, proactively preventing failures, and ensuring equipment is safe, compliant, and production-ready. This is a high-impact position for a skilled mechanic who takes pride in craftsmanship, problem-solving, and keeping heavy equipment performing at peak levels. Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience working on heavy equipment, diesel engines, or construction fleet vehicles.
  • Strong understanding of hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and diesel diagnostics.
  • Ability to read service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance scheduling and fleet tracking.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical or trade school certification in diesel or heavy equipment mechanics preferred.
  • CDL preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment including skid steers, telehandlers, excavators, trenchers, loaders, and support machinery.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine issues accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain company fleet vehicles including pickups, service trucks, trailers, and DOT-regulated vehicles.
  • Conduct routine inspections, oil changes, filter replacements, brake work, and system diagnostics.
  • Ensure all equipment meets manufacturer standards and operational safety requirements.
  • Respond to field service calls as needed to troubleshoot and repair equipment on active project sites.
  • Identify root causes of mechanical failures and implement durable corrective solutions.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to field operators to prevent recurring equipment issues.
  • Assist in emergency repair situations to minimize project downtime.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
  • Track service intervals and maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Manage inventory of parts, fluids, filters, and consumables.
  • Coordinate parts procurement to minimize repair delays.
  • Ensure tools and diagnostic equipment are maintained and calibrated.
  • Follow OSHA and company safety standards in all shop and field operations.
  • Perform DOT inspections and ensure fleet compliance documentation is current.
  • Maintain proper documentation for inspections, repairs, and maintenance logs.
  • Promote safe equipment operation and educate team members on preventative care.
