About The Position

Responsible for diagnosing and repairing school vehicles and equipment, locating and ordering parts, communicating with vendors on parts pricing and warranties, prioritizing work orders, assigning work orders to Equipment Mechanic I, supervising repairs performed by subordinates, maintaining a clean, safe and organized shop and parts inventory, developing vehicle maintenance programs, keeping abreast of new vehicle technology, gathering bids for shop equipment and supplies, assisting in driver training, attending workshops and training classes, driving school bus routes as needed, and assuming the responsibilities of fleet operations in the Transportation Manager's absence.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • ASE courses in heavy-duty brake systems, commercial vehicle air brakes systems, suspension/steering, diesel engines, preventive maintenance inspections and gasoline engines.
  • Over five years of experience in mechanic repair, including two years of supervisory experience.
  • Commercial Driver License
  • Must be able to obtain a CDL Permit and be able to retain a CDL to be considered for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all responsibilities involved in the maintenance and repair of school vehicles and equipment, including diagnosis, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and repairs.
  • Complete all vehicle maintenance records and documents to comply with Federal and State Regulations.
  • Research, order and restock parts and shop supplies.
  • Prioritize work orders.
  • Assign work orders to Equipment Mechanic I and supervise repairs made by subordinates.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organized shop. Perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Assure the District shop, vehicles and equipment meet or exceed Federal and State Standards, including, but not limited to, OSHA, DOT, EPA and CDE.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with transportation staff, administrators and users.
  • Oversee the safe disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Maintain shop equipment in good working order.
  • Secure shop by locking doors and turning lights off after each shift.
  • Clean and maintain parts shelves and bins.
  • Conduct CDE annual safety inspections of all District pupil transportation vehicles.
  • Communicate with vendors regarding parts pricing and warranties.
  • Develop bus maintenance programs.
  • Gather bids for shop equipment and supplies.
  • Assist the Transportation Manager in the development of bus/vehicle bid specifications.
  • Respond to emergency calls and off-hour emergencies. Determine the nature of the problem and complete necessary repairs.
  • Assist Driver Trainers with mechanical input.
  • Assist with snow removal.
  • Perform welding and machine work incidental to the completion of repair work.
  • Attend safety meetings, workshops and training classes as directed in order to keep abreast of new vehicle technology and regulations.
  • Drive school bus routes as needed.
  • Assist in accident investigation. Make recommendations for accident prevention.
  • Assist the Transportation Manager in the development and maintenance of the fleet maintenance budget.
