About The Position

The Fleet Maintenance Shop Manager is responsible for the overall operation and performance of the company’s fleet maintenance shop. This role leads preventive maintenance (PM) and fleet repair operations to ensure all vehicles are safe, reliable, and consistently available to support daily service. The Shop Manager oversees maintenance staff, manages work orders and shop workflow, coordinates closely with dispatch and operations, and runs the maintenance shop as a profitable business unit with a focus on productivity, cost control, and fleet reliability.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in fleet maintenance, shop management, or commercial vehicle repair operations
  • Strong working knowledge of diesel and/or commercial vehicle maintenance (motorcoach experience preferred)
  • Experience supervising shop employees and managing daily workflow
  • Knowledge of DOT/FMCSA compliance standards and inspection requirements
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency with maintenance tracking systems and general computer applications

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in luxury transportation, motorcoach, or charter bus operations
  • CDL or familiarity with CDL requirements (not required)
  • ASE certifications or similar technical credentials
  • Experience managing maintenance budgets and vendor relationships

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the fleet maintenance shop, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards
  • Ensure all vehicles are maintained in compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and state regulations
  • Manage preventive maintenance schedules and ensure PMs are completed on time and documented properly
  • Track, prioritize, and manage maintenance and repair work orders from intake through completion
  • Coordinate fleet availability with dispatch and operations to minimize downtime and prevent service disruptions
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, and compliance documentation
  • Operate the maintenance shop as a for-profit entity with strong attention to labor efficiency and cost management
  • Monitor parts usage, inventory levels, and vendor purchasing to control maintenance expenses
  • Review and manage repair costs, outside service expenses, and shop supply spending
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, reduce repeat repairs, and extend vehicle life
  • Supervise mechanics and shop personnel, including scheduling, workload planning, and daily task assignments
  • Establish performance expectations and hold the team accountable to quality, safety, and productivity standards
  • Support hiring, onboarding, training, and ongoing development of maintenance employees
  • Promote a culture of professionalism, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the maintenance shop, dispatch, and operations leadership
  • Communicate fleet status, out-of-service vehicles, and estimated repair timelines clearly and proactively
  • Provide regular updates and reporting on shop performance, PM completion, and fleet readiness
