About The Position

This position is open to Alaska Residents only. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1 located in Anchorage! What you will be doing: This position serves as the assistant biologist and crew leader for adult salmon escapement monitoring projects throughout the Kuskokwim Management Area. Under general supervision, the incumbent will assist in all phases of weir project related activities. This position will be staffed 9 months annually contingent on funding. Kuskokwim Area fisheries are characterized by a large traditional subsistence base, small-scale commercial fisheries, and complex multi-species salmon migratory patterns within the Kuskokwim River and smaller coastal drainages. Kuskokwim Area stakeholders are actively engaged in fisheries research and management activities. This position will be part of a dedicated team of researchers actively engaged in meaningful research in the Kuskokwim Area. The working conditions you can expect: During the summer months, the incumbent will travel to remote locations and rural communities throughout the Kuskokwim Area via open skiff, fixed wing aircraft, and/or helicopter. Working hours during the summer field season are often irregular and exposure to inclement weather may occur. During the field seasons, this position will require frequent travel via small aircraft and outboard skiffs to remote field sites for overnight or extended stays. Outside of the summer months, the incumbent will have an office space in Anchorage, where the daily work environment will be predominantly office based and include regular work hours. Who we are looking for: We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Ability to work and live in remote Alaskan outdoors while living in close quarters with co-workers. Experience collecting biological data from salmon species. Experience safely operating and maintaining outboard skiffs. Experience with Microsoft Office applications. Basic knowledge and experience using hand and power tools.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.
